Johnsonville is a small town in Florence County, South Carolina, midway between Lake City and Conway. The town did not establish the current location until 1913, but the area was important for the Witherspoon’s Ferry across the Pee Dee River just to the east of where the town now stands.

The ferry location also became a stagecoach horse change and meal stop besides dropping all the local mail at the Johnson's’ house. In 1843 post office was established here, named Johnsonville and eventually became the town we see today.

The surrounding area is flatlands and mostly used for agriculture, while the Carolina coast is easily reached when you book an RV in Johnsonville. To the south is Francis Marion National Forest, named after General Francis Marion, called the Swamp Fox by the British forces, and who received his commission during the Revolutionary War at Witherspoon’s Ferry.

Discover Johnsonville

The Great Outdoors

Head South-west from Johnsonville in your RV rental and you will find Lake Marion, the largest lake in South Carolina. Because of its size, covering almost 110,000 acres and with a shoreline stretching 315 miles, it has gained the nickname of South Carolina’s Inland Sea. It was created in 1941 by damming the River Santee and now creates hydroelectricity for the surrounding area. The lake is well stocked with fish, including bass, perch, and catfish while wildlife such as deer, fox, and many species of birds have made their home at the lake.

Almost completely destroyed by Hurricane Hugo in 1989, Francis Marion National Forest has recovered from the disaster and is once again a valuable recreation area. There are trails for hiking, riding, and off-road motorcycling, plus boat ramps to allow you to explore the three rivers running through the forest or the small lakes. There are many waterfalls within the forest and of particular interest is the Yellow Branch Waterfall.

Near the coastal town of Myrtle Beach is Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge which was established to protect the diverse coastal habitat of the area. One of the most vulnerable species found at the refuge is the Red-cockaded woodpecker, which is protected by the Endangered Species Act. You can also see swallow-tailed kites, black bears, foxes, and more in this special area, perfect for hiking and wildlife photography.

RV Parks

Take your RV rental from Johnsonville to the Myrtle Beach KOA Resort, and you’re sure to have a great time. Featuring plenty of things for a family to do such as the outdoor movie cinema and two playgrounds, you’re also in the heart of the town’s attractions. Within walking distance are over 40 restaurants, amusement parks, miniature golf, and amazing beaches. Despite all the facilities, the campground sites are under shady trees and offer a respite from the all-action surroundings!

For a more tranquil location, point your luxury motorhome from Johnsonville to Big Cypress Lake RV Retreat on the edge Conway. It’s a quiet site, but that doesn’t mean there’s a lack of facilities. Full hook-up sites are available with some on the lake’s edge for picturesque camping, and there are walking trails around the lake and fishing is allowed. A great getaway from the hustle and bustle of busy sites.

Exploring the City

To celebrate the towns connection with the American Revolution, the Johnsonville Heritage Festival is held every year in May at Venters Landing. The event includes various cooking competitions, games, face painting and rides for the kids, plus many other events throughout the day. It’s a genuine family event and remembrance for the local militia that fought during the war.

Just outside the town is the geophysical site known as the Johnsonville Impact Site. Some scientists believe the eight-mile crater was formed an object impacting with Earth, but the crater is poorly defined at surface level and was discovered using magnetic wave detection.

In nearby Conway, you’ll find the Conway Riverfest that celebrates Independence Day every June and features live entertainment from local musicians, an artisan market and a business expo. During the day, a variety of events are organized to keep visitors of all ages entertained.

Close to Lake City and only a short drive away in your luxury RV rental from Johnsonville is Browntown Museum. It is a Lowcountry Farmstead that retains to this day some historical buildings plus a gin house, corncrib, and smokehouse showing life as it would have been in the mid-1800s. It is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places and includes an exhibition of machinery used during the 1800s.

Johnsonville's dining out opportunities are limited to American style cuisine and fast-food outlets, but there are other towns close by that offer a much wider choice.
