Discover Johns Island

A Grand Road Trip Along the Grand Strand

Johns Island is surrounded by some of the most sumptuous beaches in South Carolina. Take your Johns Island RV rental to the nearby Kiawah Island, which boasts 10 miles of pristine beaches and around 10,000 acres of natural woodlands. About 30 miles to the north is the Isle of Palms, tempting beach-goers with six miles of sugar-white beaches and more than 50 public access paths. Keep an eye out for playful dolphins, and during the breeding season (July to October), loggerhead sea turtle hatchlings. The beaches are in the opposite direction and within easy access of Charleston so you'll have all the amenities you need for an unforgettable beach vacation.

For that truly grand seaside vacation, take your Johns Island camper rental farther north and hit South Carolina's legendary Grand Strand starting from Georgetown, about 70 miles away. The Grand Strand is an uninterrupted arc of beach land that stretches for 60 miles all the way up north to Little River. The hub of all the action is the coastal resort city of Myrtle Beach, the state’s main tourist draw. Its 15-mile stretch of honey-colored sand, 1.2-mile boardwalk, knee-high waves perfect for body-boarding, and celebrity-designed golf courses attract around 14 million visitors a year.

Even if you don’t make it all the way up there, you'll still stumble into the nearly 259,000-acre Francis Marion National Forest, dominated by pine stands and soaring bald cypress trees providing canopy to wildlife-rich swamps and marshes. Seek out the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker from a canoe, or explore the forest's extensive network of hiking, biking and motorcycle trails. There's a campground here where you can take your Johns Island motorhome rental overnight so you don’t have to cut your visit short.

From Johns Island, aim south for Hilton Head, one of the largest islands on the East Coast, with 12 miles of beaches, a vast network of bike trails, and over 30 golf courses. Keep going for an hour more and the cobblestone streets and the historic buildings of Savannah, GA will soon come into view.

Where to Park Your RV

The few RV campgrounds found in Johns Island are within Charleston's city limits, so you are close to grocery stores, supermarkets, restaurants and other urban comforts while still only half an hour away from the city and the beach. Most of the RV parks are well-appointed with full hookup sites, laundry facilities, toilets, pool and on-site playgrounds.

If you're heading north with your Johns Island rental RV, you'll find plenty of RV parks along the Grand Strand even before you've arrived at Myrtle Beach. Of course, you’ll find plenty of options when you get to the center of all the action, too. At the Francis Marion National Forest, experience camping in the company of wildlife in Buck Hall Recreation Area. Drinking water, warm-water showers, water spigots and flush toilets are available at the campground located on the Intracoastal Waterway, putting you close to 65,000 acres of marsh, tidal creeks and beaches.
