Sites and Scenery

Jensen Beach isn’t just about the ocean, although it is a huge draw. This part of Florida is named the Treasure Coast because of the large number of shipwrecks located just off the coast, with artifacts still being discovered to this day. But, the word treasure also describes the myriad of other outdoor activities that you can enjoy while traveling and staying in your RV rental in Jensen Beach.

The coastal marsh reserve of Savannas Preserve State Park offers hiking and walking trails, including a local favorite, the Glass Lizard Trail. Many wildlife photographers come to this 10 mile-long park to capture shots of the beautiful birds and other animals. Activities also include fishing and kayaking or canoeing. The trails are in a wetland, so make sure you wear appropriate shoes that can take strolling through soft dirt and sometimes wet ground. Make sure to bring your sunblock and insect repellent whenever you are exploring this type of landscape.

Twenty miles southeast of Jensen Beach is Jonathan Dickinson State Park, a hauntingly beautiful and serene spot, easy to access in your Jensen Beach rental camper. Part of the Florida Trail passes through the eastern portion of this park. You can also hike up Hobe Mountain, with beautiful views from an observatory atop the highest point in South Florida. There is a lovely education/visitor center, with friendly staff and volunteers. A favorite activity here is canoeing and kayaking in and around the Loxahatchee River mangrove areas and river wetlands.

Do you think pine woods when you think of Florida? Well, guess what? Just a short drive south-east in your Jensen Beach rental RV is Atlantic Ridge Preserve State Park. Here you can enjoy a rustic nature experience, with hiking, biking and horseback riding trails that take you through beautiful stands of pine trees, palms, and marshes. Wildlife viewing and photography is also a favorite activity at this unique park.

It really is worth your while to drive your Jensen Beach camper rental three hours south to Everglades National Park. With over 1.5 million acres of vital wetlands, there are three entrances, and each region of the park offers something different. These entrances are not connected, so do your research to figure out where you want to visit. The main entrance will introduce you to the area via the stunning Anhinga Trail - you’ll most likely see abundant wildlife from turtles, rare herons and storks, and of course the ubiquitous alligators. Climb atop Shark Valley’s 65-foot observation tower for a panoramic view of the Everglades. You can also glide over Florida Bay in a tour boat to see manatees and dolphins. Or, find solitude by taking a day or week-long canoeing/camping trip. The Everglades region is a national treasure, and something you must absolutely see in your lifetime.

Back in Jensen Beach, the main public beach is on Hutchinson Island and is named Jensen Sea Turtle Beach. This is a wide, sandy beach right on the Atlantic Ocean. Martin County lifeguards are on duty, and this spot is popular for surfing and swimming. Indian Riverside Park is also popular for its mangrove boardwalk, fishing pier, walking trail and garden, plus lovely picnic spots.

Don’t leave the area without visiting The Elliott Museum, in nearby Stuart, Florida. In its beautiful building sits one of the largest and most interesting displays of antique cars in the country, plus some antique motorcycles and bicycles. What makes it so fascinating to visit is the unique way the vehicles are displayed, across three levels, with an elevator and “lazy susan” platform that slowly revolves so you can see things in detail. Take your time and bring your camera. And, although The Elliott is known for its antique car collection, make sure to also check out exhibits that feature local art and culture, as well as the history of the area. Don’t forget the bathing suits, because the kids will love romping in the fountains next door.

Learn about the Treasure Coast, and its unique maritime history, by visiting the Maritime and Classic Boat Museum. Easily accessed by land, or even by the sea, go to the south fork of the St. Lucie River. Here you’ll see the museum’s own marina, along with their boat restoration facility. The museum's valuable collection of artifacts spans the 20th century, some which are exhibited in two galleries in the converted cottage that is now the museum. This museum offers fascinating information about the shipwrecks of the Treasure Coast, and art that explores maritime life.

The wonderful, small but comprehensive Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center is a great place for kids of all ages. There’s plenty to do, and your admission fee goes to the good cause of rescuing and rehabilitating ocean coast creatures and their habitat.
