Indianola is the county seat of Warren County, Iowa. It was first established in 1849, at the approximate center of the county, and was finally incorporated in 1863. The town's name was chosen from a newspaper story about a town in Texas, also named Indianola; the reasons for this decision were never recorded (although one can assume it was probably someone originally from Texas who chose the name).

The National Balloon Classic, National Balloon Museum and U.S. Ballooning Hall of Fame are all located in Indianola. This is not surprising since Ed Yost, the person who invented the modern hot air balloon is from Indianola. Other persons of note (eg. semi-famous) from Indianola are Casey Blake (baseball player), Todd Blythe, former football player (NFL and CFL, Canadian Football League), George Washington Carver (botanical researcher and agronomy educator), and Ilo Browne Wallace (wife of Vice President Henry A. Wallace).

Search for an RV in Indianola and you will discover traveling the way it was meant to be. Cities within traveling distance of Indianola that might also be of interest are Des Moines, Knoxville, Oskaloosa (the name says it all), Chariton and Winterset. Your Indianola RV rental is a perfect hotel on wheels that can take you to any or all of these places without having to pack and change rooms.

Discover Indianola

The Great Outdoors

Lake Ahquabi State Park is a 770-acre preserve where you can rent boats and fish (or just enjoy some rowing), go hiking or lay out on a sandy beach to work on your tan. When you're finished, bring your catch of the day back to your travel trailer rental near Indianola for a good home cooked meal.

Slightly north and west, just outside of Des Moines, Raccoon River Park is a large venue offering a multitude of sports, plus a beach for swimmers, nature trails for hikers and a fishing pier for those who like to watch someone (or something) else do all the work. Right next door, you will find Brown's Woods, with trails winding through stands of oak and hickory trees; outdoor aficionados can hike or go geocaching here on this 484-acre preserve. Park your Indianola motorhome rental here to make the most of an afternoon or day exploring this park.

RV Parks

Lake Ahquabi State Park has RV sites in its campground and is located right on the lake. There are restrooms and showers, and canoe, kayak, and paddle boat rentals. There is a playground for the children but it is a little bit away from the campground. There is also a beach between the lake and campground; guests here can fish, hike and swim. The sites have electricity.

Yellow Banks County Park has RV sites with electricity hookups. It also has restrooms and showers, a ball field and a playground for the kids. Guests here can go hiking, fishing or play horseshoes.

Walnut Woods State Park is a short 15 miles away in Des Moines but is worth the trip. This campground has sites that are spaced out well and have plenty of shade. Most of the sites have full hookups (water, sewer, and electricity) but some only have electricity. All of the sites have concrete pads. It is part of a larger park and has excellent hiking paths and a nearby bird blind, where bird watchers can enjoy a wide variety of species.

Exploring The City

Back in from the wild, Indianola has a selection of breweries and wineries waiting for you to stop by. Those with kids can check out Indianola's Tumbling Center, a sports camp that offers workshops and classes for young and younger athletes. There are two museums in Indianola worth seeing, one focused on history and the other on, you guessed it, balloons. Nearby Des Moines has an opera house for those with high brow tastes or even those who may just be curious. Vacation is always the perfect time to try new things.

Indianola is not a big town, so dining out here will not be so hard on the wallet, even for a family of four. There is a mixture of locally owned and operated cafes and restaurants, and bigger chain outlets which will keep the kids happy. Make this yet another adventure, trying something different each day (and evening), and be sure to try the local dishes which are always interesting and new. There is a wide selection of cuisines, and everyone is certain to find something to their liking. When the meal is more than you can eat in one sitting (and they often are), bring a doggy bag back to your RV rental in Indianola for a late night snack. Or better yet, get takeout and enjoy your repast under the stars, from the comfort of your Indianola camper rental. It doesn't get much better than this.
