One of the earliest trading hubs, the town was settled as early as the 1860s. The town adopted the name, Hutchins, in a nod to the president of the Houston and Texas Central Railroad (HTC), William J. Hutchins, who arranged for the rail to pass through the settlement in the 1870s.

Although this is a quiet, slow-paced town, its central proximity to Dallas and easy access to lakes like Cedar Creek Reservoir and Richland Chambers Reservoir makes it a good “home base" to start your outdoor adventure.

The closest large town is Dallas, about 12 miles to the north. Arlington, which is where Six Flags over Texas is located, is 30 miles to the northwest. Fort Worth, Dallas’ “sister city” is 12 miles past Arlington (roughly 45 miles altogether).

The Great Outdoors

When you book an RV in Hutchins, you likely want to explore the wilderness. True wilderness in this part of Texas is fast vanishing, although pockets of wilderness remain.

Trinity Forest, a 6,000-acre park, is one of the largest urban open-space parks in the U.S. This park has a mix of ecosystems, including bottomland hardwood forest, wetland, and prairie. A portion of this park lies on a former dump site, which has been restored to its former condition. The Audubon Center welcomes visitors to its sanctuaries and invites them to participate in nature education programs. Visitors also have the opportunity to explore hands-on exhibits, walk miles of nature viewing trails, and view a butterfly garden designed to provide threatened butterflies a sanctuary.

John Bunker Sands Wetland Center in Seagoville serves as the hub of environmental and social interest for this 3,100 acres of man-made wetland habitat on the Rosewood Seagoville Ranch property. The Wetland Center features boardwalks extending into the living wetland, providing an opportunity for visitors to view the wetland systems and observe wildlife.

Birdwatchers, water lovers and fishermen, cast your eye to Joe Pool Lake in Cedar Hill. The Lake is one of the largest lakes in the Dallas-Metro area, clocking in at 7,400 acres. It comes stocked with fish like largemouth black bass, crappie, and catfish. Either fish from the banks or on a boat. Go jet skiing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and canoeing, too. Bring your camper rental and park in one of the multitude RV spots available.

Cedar Creek Reservoir features over 1,000 square miles (roughly 640,000 acres) of waterway. The predominant fish species of Cedar Creek Lake are blue catfish, channel catfish, flathead catfish, largemouth bass, white bass, hybrid striped bass, and crappie. Fishing docks are available, though there are two public boat ramps and marinas. Ample parking spots are available for your Hutchins luxury motorhome.

Richland Chambers Reservoir offers fish species similar to Cedar Creek Reservoir’s, with a couple of additions: smallmouth buffalo, sunfish, and carp are also common in this lake. There are boat ramps and fishing from the banks is permitted. Parking may be limited at the marinas and boat ramps so arrive early to secure a great spot.

For a change of scenery and adventure, swing by Trinity Forest Adventure Park. The park features high ropes courses, zip lines, wobbly bridges, and tightropes. It’s the only aerial adventure park in Texas.
