Colorado’s “Friendliest Town Around” is a small town in the Rocky Mountains between Telluride and Grand Junction. The peaceful town of Hotchkiss was first settled in 1882 and later incorporated in 1901, named for local pioneer Enos T. Hotchkiss.

Few places in Colorado are more ideal for vacationers, especially those that want to rent an RV and set off to cruise the high mountain passes to take in the panoramic, stoic mountain views that dominate the western half of the state. You can book an RV in Hotchkiss and see some of the spectacular parks and natural landmarks nearby, but it would take numerous visits to see every last majestic feature in Delta County, let alone the whole state. The Great Outdoors

When you rent an RV in Hotchkiss, chances are you are doing so to explore the magical landscapes and dense forests blanketing the mountain slopes nearby. Crawford State Park is the closest park to town, just several minutes’ drive south of Hotchkiss. Most of the park revolves around the Crawford Reservoir, with boat ramps, swimming areas, beaches, and fishing spots along the water’s edge. There are a few miles of hiking trails circling the lake, as well as a visitor’s center and a campground where you can stay with your Hotchkiss camper rental.

Ridgway State Park is another lake-centric park to the south, known for being a popular hunting and fishing park with a large assortment of wildlife. There are plenty of places to go fishing, swimming, or boating along the lake, and even more room to hike through the woods or camp out under the stars. The park has three entrances, a visitor’s center, a marina, an RV campground, and wheelchair-accessible rental yurts. Vega State Park is found north of town on the other side of Grand Mesa National Forest, which is itself a fantastic place to visit with your Hotchkiss motorhome rental. The alpine lake in the heart of the park is a popular fishing area. Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is one of the best parks in the country, and it is only a half an hour's drive from town. This stunning park is home to a river gorge/canyon rivaling that of the great Grand Canyon National Park, taking its name from the fact that the bottom of the canyon only ever sees a small sliver of sunlight. You can spend days exploring the dark depths of this incredible feature or hike high above it to bask in truly fantastic views.

You can walk through town on picturesque streets lined with trees and flowers, and one of the sightseeing opportunities you’ll find is the incredible Hotchkiss-Crawford Historical Museum. This highly informative museum operates out of the downtown area, loaded with amazing antiques, pictures, and exhibits concerning the founding of the two towns. The knowledgeable docents at the museum are happy to spend their time explaining and describing the history of the town.

Aside from the history museum, there are a few restaurants, shops, wineries, and other local businesses in town, but you can easily take your RV for a short drive to Delta, the county seat of Delta County. This small city has lots of historic buildings, including Fort Uncompahgre, an old log cabin trappers fort built by fur traders. There is also a gift shop with souvenirs at this unique site.

The Delta County Museum is a depository for all things Delta County, with antiques, artifacts, tools, household objects, weapons, clothing from other time periods, and much more. The museum is housed in the town’s old firehouse and even features pieces of natural history like rare minerals and dinosaur bones.
