“The Friendly City” is an awfully inviting motto for a place to have, and Hazel Park, Michigan is certainly inviting. This charming little city suburb is located minutes from downtown Detroit and has been an amazing place to live in or visit since its incorporation back in 1941.
Hazel Park was first built in the late 19th century, after a group of farmers met and agreed to build a schoolhouse, the first step of many to create a town of their own. The name was chosen due to the abundance of hazelnut bushes found in the vicinity. For years, Hazel Park remained a small town with not much going, but when the Ford Motor Company expanded to the next town over, the area became more heavily populated.
Now when you book an RV in Hazel Park, you can enjoy both the comforts and attractions of Detroit, with the flexibility and freedom to road trip out to the countryside in search of rustic campgrounds and spectacular scenery.
There is an overwhelming number of recreation areas, forests, and lakeside state parks in Michigan owed in part to the state’s love of the great outdoors. William C. Sterling State Park can be found when you take your Hazel Park campervan rental south to the other side of Detroit, on the shores of Lake Erie. It is Michigan’s only park located on Lake Erie, with incredible views of sunrise overlooking one of the largest freshwater lakes on the planet. There are over 200 campsites if you want to stay with the Hazel Park RV rental, in addition to picnic shelters, sandy beaches, and a 36-hole golf course.
Genesee Recreation Area is found to the north by Flint, another exceptional nature park where you can spend your vacation. Thousands of acres of evergreen forest land, hiking trails, lakes, and beaches make up this thrilling recreation hub. This amazing stretch of land has lots of hiking trails, a BMX biking park, basketball courts, and a disc golf course.
If you venture to the north to the tip of Michigan’s “thumb,” you can stay at two of the best state parks in the state with your Hazel Park camper rental. Both Sleeper State Park and Port Crescent State Park have an abundance of activities to enjoy during your stay. Sleeper State Park has a gorgeous stretch of beachfront on the Saginaw Bay, and trails that are used for hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing. There is a campground too. Port Crescent State Park is a dark-sky preserve on Lake Huron, meaning it is an epic place to catch a glimpse of the cosmos in all of its celestial glory. Aside from nighttime stargazing, you can camp, hike, kayak, canoe, fish, swim, or have a picnic at this wonderful state park.
There aren’t too many campgrounds and RV parks concentrated in the metro area around Detroit, and some of the best options are located just over the border in Canada by the city of Windsor. Windsor Campground has spacious campsites, rental cabins, pavilions, beach volleyball, a pool, and a large fishing pond.
Wildwood Golf & RV Resort could be a great place for golfing enthusiasts, with an 18-hole golf course, a driving range, a pro shop, an adjoining campground for the Hazel Park camper rental, and a bar and grill to keep your stomach full.
Downriver Marina/Campground is a tranquil park by the water, with its own marina to keep personal watercraft and boats secure. There is a bait and tackle shop for all your fishing needs, and a great hidden gem of a restaurant too.
