If you are looking for a charming southern town for your next vacation getaway, book an RV in Haymarket, Virginia. About 35 miles to the west of downtown Washington D.C., this tiny village in Prince William County is absolutely steeped in history, from the inception of the United States, and before the revolutionary war. Haymarket is nicknamed “The Crossroads” because it is situated on former Iroquois native hunting grounds where two major hunting paths intersected. Nowadays, the town lies on a newer incarnation of these crossroads, at the junction of both US Highway 15/501 and Interstate 66. The interstate takes travelers all the way to Alexandria, Baltimore, and many other cities on the east coast, in addition to the capital of the United States.

In springtime each year, you can find the largest pick-your-own flower festival in the United States, just two miles outside of downtown Haymarket. With over 500,000 bulbs planted, this three-week festival is just one reason why renting an RV in Haymarket, Virginia is an exciting and memorable experience.

Mason Neck is a great place to see wild ospreys, great blue herons, and even bald eagles. In addition to the many sights and wildlife viewing spots, Mason Neck is the site of two ancient Native American camps that existed thousands of years ago and provide incredible insight to anthropologist and archaeologist.

If you drive inland towards the mountains, Monongahela National Forest is a can’t-miss place to camp in your Haymarket rental RV. With many wilderness areas, you can venture off and do your own thing in the wild backcountry or stick to the many camper-friendly vacation spots like Spruce Knob-Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area, which features the tallest peaks in the state and many wonderful rock climbing features to try, for all different skill levels, too.

You’ll feel right at home in your Haymarket motorhome rental if you visit the crown jewel of Virginia, Shenandoah National Park. With many stunning waterfalls, hiking trails, and raging rivers, you won’t believe your eyes when you gaze upon the exquisite beauty the park has to offer. Perhaps the most famous attraction in the park, however, is the Skyline Drive that stretches through the entire park over the Blue Ridge Mountains and has some of the best views you could ever imagine. City Sightseeing

Although Haymarket is extremely tiny, the town’s surrounding area has lots to see when you vacation there. Due to its location, the small town and many of its neighbors were caught in the thick of things during both the American Revolutionary War, and the American Civil War. During the Civil War, much of the town was burned to the ground by Union troops, so a lot has been lost. Fortunately, Haymarket still retains some pre-war history to speak of. St Paul’s Church is one of the few buildings that survived the Civil War and is a beautiful reminder of how the area once looked. Locust Bottom, Mt. Atlas, and the Old Town Hall and School are also all on the National Register of Historic Places, and all are worth a visit to admire the architecture.

The town of Haymarket has placed a huge emphasis on its own history, as well as the history of the United States, and opted to open the Haymarket Museum in the downtown area (coincidentally housed in the former Town Hall building). Sticking with the historical theme, the town also has a Cold War Museum, which is certainly one of only a few worldwide. The museum was founded by the son of Francis Gary Powers, the famous pilot who was shot down over the USSR during the Cold War. With many exhibits focusing on the Bay of Pigs Invasion, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the Berlin Wall, this museum is rich with history and consequently happens to be a place to learn a thing or two.

Last but not least, Manassas National Battlefield Park is the site of both the first and second battles of Bull Run, famously important and crucial battles that helped turn the tide of the Civil War. The park has incredibly well-preserved battle headquarters, medic buildings, and many other war features, as well as guided tours where knowledgeable park rangers explain in detail the events of the battles and the war itself.

RV Parks to Visit
