Big Sky Country draws crowds to awe over its mountainous expanses. For miles, you will see the wide-open sky, cattle, and other wildlife not commonly found in other states. Montana is a rather large state but situated in the north central section is a nice sized city, the eighth largest, worthy of an RV rental trip. The closest major populated areas are Great Falls, Shelby, and Malta, each 80-110 miles away.

Book a luxury RV rental to Havre to see a unique city with some fun history. Havre, MT has something hiding beneath their streets. While meandering about, you may notice seemingly random purple square grids scattered about. Though odd, they aren’t random at all; they’re skylights for a previous underground mall. This mall housed numerous scandalous endeavors including a brothel and rooms to smuggle alcohol during the Prohibition. Bet you would have never guessed that!

Discover Havre

The Great Outdoors

Havre has a strong historical connection to at least three Native American groups as indicated by artifacts found at the Wahkpa Chu'gn Archaeological Site. Known locally as the buffalo jump site, this preserved outdoors area dates back 2000 years and draws visitors every day with its unique past. The Native Americans would hunt buffalo by driving them off a cliff, which would kill or wound the buffalo, making for a smart and successful tactic on their part. There’s a 20 feet wall of buffalo bone remains to prove their point. Take a tour or just meander on your own around the site and learn about what was found here and how the Native Americans interacted with Havre many years ago.

Bear Paw Lake and Trail areas are a great way to get out and see the wild side of town. Bear Paw Lake is used primarily for fishing, but no motor-powered boats of any kind are allowed on the water. Bear Paw Trail area features a trail etched in the earth from by the soldiers that were stationed at the nearby Fort Assiniboine. Along the 3.5-mile trail, depressions made by wagon wheels are still viewable, and you’ll be watched from afar by the local wildlife.

Havre is also home to the largest county park in the nation. So, while in the area with your travel trailer rental, Beaver Creek Park is the park to see. In total, the park encompasses a 10000-acre strip along the northern Bear Paw Mountains. Beaver Creek wants you to engage with the area and fully encourages biking, hiking, camping, fishing, picnicking, and just about anything else that gets you outside.

Now it is a bit of a drive, and by t we mean a good 3.5 hours from Havre, but there is a very highly regarded national park waiting to be explored. And, how often do you really find yourself traversing the Montana terrain with an RV rental? Glacier National Park is crowned the hiker’s paradise with its seemingly endless trails and breathtaking views. Of course, there’s more to do here, but their 700-miles worth of trails sure do steal all the focus. This park will show you just why people come to or never leave Montana.

RV Parks

If you were anticipating Havre being able to accommodate RV travelers, you would be right. Staying in Havre with your camper rental is really quite simple. You have a lot of options from primitive sights to only the basics and more. The general consensus, however, is that most have some sort of full hookup package with a handful of enticing on site amenities to keep things fun.

But, if you’re feeling like becoming one with the Havre wildlife, Beaver Creek Park does have overnight RV sites. Since Beaver Creek is quite large there are several different campsites throughout, each with their own small differences depending on what camping experiences you’d like. Some sites have electrical hookups, and some do not so be sure to read the fine print before reserving a spot at one of the sites.

Exploring the City

We did already mention the mysterious underground mall situated below Havre’s streets. Well good news, you’re able to go on a “Beneath the Streets” tour to see what the hype is all about. The mall has been restored with shops that would have appeared those many years ago, sans brothel (sorry!). Enjoy this unique bit of Havre’s history even if it is below ground.

If you’ve already spent a lovely morning walking around Bear Paw trails, head over to Fort Assiniboine to learn where those soldiers were going to and from so much that they left a literal trail. This fort is the largest military post found in Montana. To keep its memory alive, Havre has taken to ensuring the fort and its grounds are maintained and that events are hosted to tell its story. A tour guide will gladly take you through Fort Assiniboine and narrate its past.

For some evening time fun, Havre does have a casino. Try your luck at Crystal Rock Casino and maybe walk away with your travel trailer rental in Havre a little richer, in both knowledge and your wallet.

Should you be looking for a taste of the Montana air, consider a travel trailer rental from Havre. Enjoy the trails, try your hand at the casino, and enjoy the scenery.
