Situated adjacent to Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, Harrogate is a small city that’s home to the Lincoln Memorial University. The community has been in existence since the 19th century, but it wasn’t officially incorporated until 1993.
Today, Harrogate is the largest community in Claiborne County and an attractive place to rent an RV and base yourself while exploring northern Tennessee. There’s a good selection of RV campgrounds with both forested and waterfront settings in the surrounds, with the center of Knoxville just over an hour's drive away and Lexington, Kentucky a two-hour drive to the north.
Pick up your motorhome rental in Harrogate and head into the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, which sprawls to the north along the borders between Tennessee, Kentucky, and Virginia. It centers around the Cumberland Gap (a natural break in the Appalachian Mountains), with scenic hiking trails and historic settlements a highlight of the park. Begin your visit at the Cumberland Gap Visitor Center to gain an insight into the cultural and natural history of the park, then explore along the extensive Ridge Trail or wander amidst the restored structures of the early 20th-century Hensley Settlement.
A 40-minute drive north near Pineville, KY is the Kentucky Ridge State Forest, which sprawls over more than 15,000 acres in Bell County. It includes the Pine Mountain State Resort Park, which is home to the aptly-named Chained Rock - a boulder that was chained to a mountain above Pineville in the 1930s. The area is a hub for recreational pursuits, including hiking and horseback riding, as well as featuring a children’s playground and a mini-golf course.
To the southwest of Harrogate is the Chuck Swan State Forest, which occupies a scenic peninsula between the Powell and Clinch River on the eastern shores of Norris Lake. It’s a popular mountain biking and equestrian destination, with miles of gravel roads traversing the sprawling old-growth forest. If you’re a keen angler, you can cast a line to see what’s biting in the waters of Norris Lake or venture underground to explore the caves of the Chuck Swan State Forest.
Pick up your RV rental in Harrogate and pull into one of the RV sites at the Cumberland Gap Wilderness Road Campground, which offers 160 sites in a picturesque wooded setting. It’s located near the southern entrance to the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, with 20, 30, or 50 amp electrical hookups, hot showers, and potable water available.
Or, drive east to the Mountain Pass Campground, which is located on the Powell River to the south of Cumberland Gap National Historical Park. There are large waterfront sites with full hookups available and direct access to fishing, canoeing, and hiking.
Situated to the south of Harrogate on the shores of Norris Lake is the Cedar Grove Marina & Campground. All campsites offer water and electrical (30 or 50 amp service) hookups and a dumping station, with waterfront access and a vast green area for recreational pursuits.
You can also make the 15-minute drive to New Tazewell where there’s a more extensive choice of services and a Walmart where you may be able to set up for a night or two with the manager’s permission.
Park your RV rental near Harrogate and explore the campus of Lincoln Memorial University, which occupies the western part of town. It’s home to the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum where artifacts and personal objects of the former president are displayed. See the cane that Lincoln was using at Ford's Theatre the night of his assassination, then browse the extensive collection of books and rotating art exhibitions.
While exploring the city, take time to relax in Harrogate City Park, a scenic green space that’s a hub for fitness and relaxation. There are walking and cycling trails where you can stretch your legs, as well as a soccer field and a children’s playground where young guests can let loose. A path links north from Harrogate City Park to the campus of Lincoln Memorial University then continues into the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park.
Harrogate makes a good base for visiting Knoxville, which lies just over an hour’s drive to the south on the banks of the Tennessee River. Discover the people and events that have shaped the region at the Museum of East Tennessee History or admire the 19th-century architecture that clusters around vibrant Market Square. If you’re a foodie, coincide your visit with the Knoxville Farmers Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays where you can pick up fresh produce, regional treats, and ready-to-eat meals.
Harrogate is home to a supermarket where you can pick up supplies, as well as a handful of eateries for dining out. There are also gas stations if you want to fill up your campervan rental in Harrogate.
