After Cullman, Hanceville is the second largest town in Cullman County. Hanceville was moved back and forth between both Blount and Cullman Counties several times before finally becoming a permanent fixture in Cullman County. Despite being the second largest town, the small rural community small, with a population of less than 5,000 people.

Hanceville was incorporated in 1879 where it existed primarily as a farming community for much of its existence. In 2011, a major tornado swept through Cullman County and wreaked havoc on the town of Hanceville. There are a few parks and recreation areas that will greet you when you rent an RV in Hanceville. Tennis and basketball courts, swimming pools, recreational sports fields, picnic pavilions, fishing areas, playgrounds, and superb walking paths are all fantastic reasons to check out the Hanceville parks before you even leave town. The Veterans Memorial Park is one of the better parks in town, with well-kept and maintained facilities, and finely manicured landscaping. True to its name, the park is adorned with memorial plaques and monuments to the servicemen and servicewomen that have defended the United States. There is also a lovely pavilion-covered fishing dock to keep anglers dry while fishing for trout or bass.

Rickwood Caverns State Park is an interesting stop to check out with the Hanceville rental RV, as it is only a 10-minute drive south on US-31. This incredible limestone labyrinth underground is said to be over 260 million years old, with underground rooms and pools full of blind cave fish that never see the light of day. In addition to this stunning geological wonder, the 380-acre park has a large pool, hiking trails, picnic shelters, campgrounds, and even a gem shop where you can pan for your very own gems or hunt for prehistoric fossils.

Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge is to the north near the city of Decatur and is another fine place to take your Hanceville RV rental. Hunting and fishing are very popular in this 35,000-acre sanctuary along the banks of the Tennessee River, but hikers and birdwatcher enjoy observing the numerous migratory birds that stop by for some rest along their transcontinental journey.

Finally, William B. Bankhead National Forest and Talladega National Forest are two of the most spectacular natural areas in the entire state. Talladega National Forest covers the southern Appalachian Mountain Range and all the glorious waterfalls, mountain peaks, dense forests, and panoramic views that come with it. William B. Bankhead National Forest features the state’s only National Wild and Scenic River, the Sipsey Fork. Known as the “land of a thousand waterfalls”, here you can canoe, hike, bike, ride on horseback, or visit the stunning Kinlock Shelter that features petroglyphs inscribed on the walls which date back thousands of years.

City Sightseeing

Besides the quaint diners and locally owned shops, there are a few fun ways to pass the time in both Hanceville and its larger neighbor, Cullman. You don’t need to be religious to enjoy the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament, a massive, beautiful building dedicated to Catholic worship. People from all over the world visit the shrine on their pilgrimages to the holy site, which was built by a group of nuns.

Ave Maria Grotto is a four-acre park in an old rock quarry that features 125 miniature reproductions of famous historical landmarks throughout the world. You can see models of St. Peters Church in Rome at the small park in Alabama, a park which can now be found on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Evelyn Burrow Museum features a fascinating collection of artwork from a variety of different time periods. On the campus of Wallace State Community College, it is a pleasure to gaze upon the exhibits located within the gallery. Cullman County Museum is located within a replica of the house that John Cullman once lived in. John Cullman was a German immigrant that founded the Cullman community over 100 years ago. This museum has a wealth of information about the county, from prehistoric times to the native tribes that lived on the land before the settlers arrived.

Alabama is absolutely loaded with beautiful natural scenery and outdoor recreation opportunities, and there are plenty of places to set up camp with the Hanceville rental camper. Although many like to rough it in tents in the backwoods of Talladega National Forest, there is a massive demand for RV-friendly campsites due to the influx of visitors that pour into the “Heart of Dixie” each summer.
