Hamilton found its beginnings in the late 19th century shortly after coal and iron were discovered in the area. Its population boomed at the turn of the century as the town became known as the “Pittsburgh of the West” thanks to the plentiful mineral reserves and manufacturing taking place nearby. However, the region has always been susceptible to flooding from the Skagit River, which eventually led much of the town’s population departing for adjacent towns.

If you book an RV in Hamilton, you’ll be putting yourself in a convenient position for visiting the rest of Skagit County and the Puget Sound region. But while you’ll have no trouble finding parking with a camper rental in Hamilton, the same cannot be said for many of the other cities nearby. The Skagit Country transit bus leaves from the town of Mount Vernon, a short drive to the west. From there you can ride to Anacortes, home of the San Juan Island ferry and a popular summer tourist destination. If you choose to make your way down to Seattle, it’s well worth checking out the public transportation options available, as parking and traffic can be quite treacherous there.

The Great Outdoors

Being situated in the northwest corner of Washington, you’ll never be short on great things to do outside when you rent an RV here. The Skagit River flows along the southern edge of town and is an ideal place to do some kayaking. Rentals are available in Mount Vernon and most visitors to the area will put in a little ways to the east of Hamilton where there’s more beautiful mountain scenery.

If you head a short distance to the west, you can climb Mount Erie just outside of Anacortes. The trail isn’t too difficult, but it will still probably take a few hours for those in moderately good physical condition. However, at the summit, you’ll be rewarded with some of the most stunning views of Puget Sound and its many islands.

North Cascades National Park is the flagship destination for outdoor enthusiasts traveling to this part of the state though. This rugged section of wilderness doesn’t get crowded like many of the other national parks in the area but offers some truly amazing hiking trails. While many of the best routes are multi-day backpacking trips, there are plenty of day hikes to waterfalls and lakes that can be accomplished in just a few hours. If you don’t feel like climbing mountains on foot, take a scenic drive down State Route 20, which runs right out of downtown Hamilton right into the park.

RV Parks near Hamilton

Many of the best campsites can be found along the Skagit River when you get an RV rental in Hamilton. One of the options is the Concrete / Grady Creek KOA. The sites here include full hookups for your motorhome rental from Hamilton along with laundry facilities, a swimming pool, a dog park, and a mini-golf course. If you’re traveling with the family and need a quiet place to stay, this could be a good option.

For a rustic option, check out the sites at Howard Miller Steelhead Park, not too far to the east of Hamilton. Sites are somewhat limited, but the park does have a dumping station, showers, and a boat launch on the river if watersports are part of your travel plans. Just a quick drive to the east of there is Wilderness Village RV Park, which has full hookups, showers, and laundry facilities.

You could also camp out in the parking lot of the Mount Vernon Walmart. With manager permission, it might be possible to stay for a night or two, but be sure to be stocked up on supplies because there won’t be amenities there.

Exploring the Town of Hamilton

Due to the fertile soil and relatively high precipitation, Skagit County has several beautiful gardens worth visiting. The Roozengarde Display Garden, home of the annual Tulip Festival, is an impressive five-acre plot of tulips and lilies flanked by an authentic Dutch windmill. Due to the Pacific Northwest climate, the outdoor garden is only in bloom for a short time each year, but there are several greenhouses on the property housing some other beautiful plants.

If you’re an aviation fanatic you’ll want to stop by the North Cascades Vintage Aircraft Museum at the Concrete Airport. It’s definitely a hidden gem that doesn’t see a whole lot of tourists, but there are actually five hangers full of beautifully restored airplanes from the 1930s and '40s here. It’s the perfect rainy day activity when you get a travel trailer rental in Hamilton.

Hamilton itself doesn’t have too many restaurants, so you may need to drive over to Concrete or Lyman if you want a bite to eat. Even then, you'll mostly find American staples like pizza and burgers, with the occasional Chinese restaurant thrown in.
