The small mountain village of Guffey, CO, is located west of Colorado Springs in the Rocky Mountains. At an elevation of 8,500 feet, Guffey is sparsely populated and was once a thriving mining community before the industry left the region. This quirky town is known for its bizarre hijinks, like electing dogs and cats to the office of Mayor or celebrating the Fourth of July Fried Chicken Fly where fried chickens are launched from manmade devices to beat the record.

If you book an RV in Guffey, it enables you to have an authentic experience in the mountains that not many other places are capable of producing. Of course, the town is small so you will find yourself aching to explore the alpine valleys and majestic peaks that the Centennial State is known for.

Discover Guffey

Explore the Outdoors

Planning a vacation in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado can be daunting when you rent an RV and try to cram your itinerary with excitement. It’s no secret that most people come to places like Guffey to rent an RV and enjoy the wealth of incredible parks, forests, and scenic places found all around the state. There are several extraordinary state parks close to town that you can bring your Guffey camper rental to get your trip started off right. Eleven Mile State Park is a well-known park in the mountains with a large lake acting as the main focal point. The reservoir has a thriving kokanee salmon population, making it one of the best places to go fishing in the state. There is a large marina on the water where guests can dock their boats and lots of open water to kayak, canoe, or go water skiing. The activities in the park aren’t just limited to the lake either; there are plenty of trails to hike around the lake, or mountain bike if you have the gear. Camp out by the lake in your Guffey RV rental for some spectacular views of the mountains hovering over the shimmering lake beside your campsite.

Spinney Mountain State Park is situated right near Eleven Mile State Park, giving you a chance to explore two distinct recreation areas with hardly any extra driving. Spinney Mountain State Park has a lake of its own where you can also fish, swim, or boat, and Spinney Mountain itself is an excellent hike to accomplish with fantastic views of the surrounding area.

It would be impossible to cover all the national forests of Colorado, but Pike National Forest is the closest to Guffey and therefore the most relevant of the bunch. This fabulous forest practically envelops the town of Guffey, so it is hard to avoid even if you wanted to. The forest holds over one million acres of gorgeous evergreen forest that blankets the impressive mountains of the Rockies. There are lots of unknown lookout spots yet to be discovered, so hiking and exploring the massive forest is an absolute treat for outdoors enthusiasts. You can camp out at one of the forest’s many campgrounds in your Guffey motorhome rental, or you can head off to one of the state’s national parks like Rocky Mountain National Park or Great Sand Dunes National Park. Both are impressive for a variety of different reasons in their own right but Great Sand Dunes National Park is slightly closer to town and thus easier to get to. The park has a wealth of hiking trails but it is mostly known for the astonishingly large sand dunes that look as if someone stole a bit of the Sahara Desert and moved it to Colorado. You can climb these towering dunes, and even sandboard down them for an experience like no other.

RV Parks to Visit

If finding a suitable place to camp with a travel trailer rental near Guffey should be simple. Like anywhere in Colorado, there is a slew of RV parks and campgrounds, reflecting the state’s affinity for camping in the great outdoors. Royal Gorge/Cañon City KOA is in a nice location for those who want to check out Cañon City and do some sightseeing in town. The park has its own pool open during the summer, as well as a snack bar, a mini golf course, and a tour shuttle for guests. Cripple Creek KOA is a bit farther away but enables you to discover a different mountain town known for its history and its casinos. Cripple Creek KOA is the highest altitude KOA campground in the country at over 10,000 feet in elevation.

You can also camp out at Eleven Mile State Park, Spinney Mountain State Park, or any other public campgrounds operated by the state and federal government. These campgrounds are usually less likely to have amenities, but more likely to leave you enamored by stunning views and tranquility.

City Sightseeing

It wouldn’t be quite accurate to describe Guffey as a lively town with a vibrant downtown; it is much more of a sleepy, laid-back village in the mountains that will serve as your home base when you rent an RV. If you are looking for shopping or fine dining, you will have to find it elsewhere. Cañon City is a short drive from Guffey and has much more of an exciting town atmosphere to speak of, with amazing museums like the Museum of Colorado Prisons. This museum has a whole host of artifacts and historically significant buildings to observe, showcasing the life of inmates in Colorado throughout the years.

The Royal Gorge Regional Museum & History Center does a fantastic job explaining the region’s complicated history. There are natural history exhibits with fossils, Native American artifacts, and old mining implements on display for guests to see. If you or your family enjoy learning about dinosaurs, the Royal Gorge Dinosaur Experience takes visitors on a wild ride through the ages, with hands-on exhibits, animatronic dinosaurs, fossils, and dinosaur skeletons too. If you have had your fair share of museums, check out the Royal Gorge Route Railroad, a legacy train that takes guests on scenic rides through the countryside on an old preserved train from long ago.
