Grants is a small town in central New Mexico, a short drive west of Albuquerque, one of the state’s largest cities. The town is a beautiful place full of old stucco buildings and adobe homes.

Grants was first founded as a railroad camp back in the late 19th century when the three Grants Brothers were awarded a contract to build a major portion of the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad through the region. Grants was initially called Grants Camp and Grants Station before early residents settled on the name Grants. After the railroad was completed and the logging ceased in the nearby Zuni Mountains, Grants shifted its focus to growing carrots. At one point in time, the town was known as the Carrot Capital of the United States. Newly built dams and irrigation systems helped this desert town prosper as an agricultural hub for some time, before uranium was discovered in the soil, causing a major mining boom in town, further changing the course of the town’s history. From that point on, Grants became the Uranium Capital of the World, a far cry from its humble logging and carrot growing origins.

After the mining boom ended in the late 1980s, Grants was again forced to change its livelihood. To remain relevant, the village slowly became a tourism hotspot, commonly visited by residents of Albuquerque, and by people from throughout the country too. With the help of Route 66, glorious desert landscapes, divine mountains, and a convenient location on Interstate 40, you can now book an RV in Grants and see it for the thriving, prosperous, and welcoming community it has become.

The Great Outdoors

Part of New Mexico’s vacation appeal stems from the ease with which visitors can access the state's natural beauty. Travelers can revel in the majestic landscapes and camp beneath the stars at tranquil campgrounds. There are plenty of places to visit with the Grants campervan rental in central New Mexico, like Bluewater State Park just north of town off of Interstate 40. A massive lake provides a central focus for this amazing park, with divine beaches encapsulating it on all sides. There are plenty of places to hike, swim, go fishing, boat, and enjoy birdwatching on the shores of Bluewater Lake, with nearly 70 species of birds known to call it home. You can even try your hand at ice fishing in the wintertime, as the lake commonly freezes thanks to its high elevation.

If you head south of town in your Grants motorhome rental on Interstate 25 toward Las Cruces, you can spend a few days at Elephant Butte Lake State Park, another charming lake park in central New Mexico. Elephant Butte Lake is located outside of Truth or Consequences, and is the largest lake in the state; the state park happens to be one of the largest of its kind in all of New Mexico too. There are over 200 miles of shoreline on the large lake, along with a historical landmark dam, and three campgrounds. On top of that, there are concession stands, stores, marinas, and other fantastic businesses on the lake’s edges.

The Trail of the Ancients Scenic Byway is not a park per se; rather, it is a trail you can travel along to discover some of the most breathtaking natural landmarks in the West. There are plenty of amazing things to see when you drive this famous route in your Grants campervan rental, like El Malpais National Monument in the nearby Zuni Mountains. The monument is full of lava tubes, magma fields, volcanic remnants, and barren terrain as a result of the immense geological fury beneath the Earth’s crust. In Grants, you can even see cinder cones and ice caves thanks to its geological activity.

Mining in the area goes back well over 100 years, but the museum pays extra attention to the role of uranium in shaping the town’s economy and future. Guests can learn how the element was discovered in the soil by a Navajo native man, how it is extracted from the Earth, and what sorts of technologies it can be used for too. You can even see some ancient pottery and artwork left behind by the Navajo people, unearthed during the excavation for uranium extraction.

The Trail of the Ancients Scenic Byway isn’t just a collection of natural landmarks. Over half of the sites on the trail are ancient settlements, ruins, petroglyph sites, and remnants left behind by tribes over 1,000 years ago. Casamero Pueblo, the Zuni Pueblos, Aztec Ruins National Monument, and the Chaco Culture National Historical Park are just a few of the many cultural heritage sites scattered throughout western New Mexico, a real treat for those who love learning about history and other native cultures.
