Established in 1889 as a prospector’s camp, Gold Bar has flourished as an adventure seeker’s hub thanks to its location between the Skykomish River and the Cascade Mountains. It’s made a name as a white-water rafting destination, as well as being on the doorstep of the easy trails that wind through Wallace Falls State Park.
Gold Bar has a storied history as a construction camp for the Great Northern Railway and was once home to a large population of Chinese workers. Many were hastily smuggled out of the settlement in coffins (but alive) by construction engineer Eduard Bauer during a tumultuous period of conflict. From a population of 300 in 1940, the town has grown to more than 2,000 people, lured by the fresh air, rich history, and magnificent natural surrounds, all just an hour's drive from Seattle.
Gold Bar serves as the gateway to the Wallace Falls State Park, which sprawls across 1,380 acres to the north of the town. It encompasses old-growth coniferous forests and picturesque waterfalls, as well as the remains of railroad equipment that stands as evidence of the region’s logging history. Witness the 367-foot Wallace Falls that cascades in three sections or follow one of the hiking and mountain biking trails that lead through the emerald green landscapes.
Alternatively, pick up your motorhome rental in Gold Bar and drive east to the Lake Serene and Bridal Veil Falls Trailhead, which takes you along a seven-mile route to a stunning alpine lake nestled in the Cascade Mountains. It’s one of the most popular hiking trails in the Mount Baker Snoqualmie Forest, with pets welcome to accompany you on a lead. After admiring the lake, you can continue across a log bridge to Lunch Rock, from where you can jump into the lake and swim.
You can also rent an RV and drive to the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, which sprawls across the eastern slopes of the Cascade Range and encompasses vast tracts of wilderness that are ideal for those seeking an escape. Soak up the 360-degree panoramas from the summit of Goat Peak or witness the majestic Okanogan Valley from Maple Pass on trails that lead through boreal forest through to high-elevation steppe. In addition to hiking, the protected area offers plenty of opportunities for mountain biking, rock climbing, and horseback riding, not to mention cross-country and downhill skiing during the winter months.
Pick up your camper rental in Gold Bar and you can make the short drive west to the Thunderbird RV & Camping Resort, which lies on the beautiful Skykomish River. It features RV sites and has a dog park, as well as a children’s playground, mini golf facilities, and three pools to choose from. If you’re a keen angler, there’s also on-site salmon and steelhead fishing.
Alternatively, head farther west with the Gold Bar camper rental to the Eagle Park in Monroe, another pet-friendly RV destination that offers 20 sites (vehicles must be 1998 or newer models). There are 20 and 30-amp hookups available and a children’s playground on site, as well as picnic tables scattered along the creek for peaceful meals.
Gold Bar is home to a small supermarket where you can stock up on groceries, as well as gas stations if you want to fill up your rental RV. There are a handful of cafes and eateries where you can dine out, with a more extensive choice of services and shopping centers in nearby Monroe, together with a Walmart where you may be able to set up for a night or two with the manager’s permission.
Park your RV rental near Gold Bar and wander through the town on foot, stopping at one of the local cafes while soaking up the views of the Skykomish River. This waterway is renowned for its fantastic fly fishing for salmon and trout, as well as winter steelhead during December and January.
There are numerous adventure operators in Gold Bar offering white-water rafting trips and scenic raft floats on the Skykomish River and beyond. Gently float down the Skykomish with the peak of Mount Index looming behind and spot bald eagles perched in the trees scouting out their next meal. Alternatively, you can embark on an adventurous two-day white-water rafting trip from Gold Bar, tackling the Class III rapids on the Skykomish and Wenatchee Rivers.
If you want to delve into the region’s past, visit the Monroe Historical Society & Museum, which occupies the original City Hall on the Main Street. Browse the collection of old photographs and artifacts relating to Monroe’s early days, as well as the industries that helped to build Snohomish County. The museum is a short stroll from the picturesque green space of Al Borlin Park, with numerous walking trails winding between Woods Creek and the Skykomish River.
Whether you’re visiting Snohomish County for its white-water rafting, waterfalls, or mountainous trails, book an RV in Gold Bar and start exploring.
