The charming village of Galena, Ohio is a tiny community quite close to the state capital, Columbus. This idyllic suburb was originally known as Zoar but was later renamed Galena in 1816. The village was purposefully settled in between the Big and Little Walnut Creeks as a mill site, which kick-started the economy and made Galena prosperous.

Aside from the town green, there is not much going on in this sleepy New England-style community. The main attraction is the glorious waterfront boardwalk on the shores of the Hoover Reservoir, which serves as a recreation hub in the summertime. The elegant scenery and slow-paced lifestyle in Galena are attractive to those looking for a peaceful place to take a break from their chaotic lives and rent an RV. When you book an RV in Galena, this delightful little town coupled with the nearby big city of Columbus should cover just about everything you need on your next adventure to Ohio’s heartland.

Discover Galena

Explore the Outdoors

Hoover Reservoir is one of the main points of interest in Galena, providing a place to fish, swim, and boat when the weather permits it. The Galena Brook Trail and the Walnut Creek Trail offer scenic walkways for cyclists, hikers, joggers, and pet owners to exercise and breathe in the fresh outdoor air. The trickling brooks and streams are tranquil and lead to the massive reservoir to the south. Hoover Reservoir Park can be found on the opposite end of the body of water and is an excellent place to bring your Galena RV rental to enjoy some boating, disc golf, nature trails, and more.

Alum Creek Lake lies to the west of Galena. Alum Creek State Park Beach is the best way to enjoy this marvelous lake as it contains a gorgeous beach that gently slopes into the water. There is a campground on site so you can stay overnight in your Galena motorhome rental when visiting the park while enjoying a variety of other activities like swimming and fishing, or snowmobiling, snowshoeing, or cross-country skiing when the snowy season hits. Delaware State Park is fabulous too and is named for the indigenous tribe of people that inhabited much of the northeastern United States. There is also a disc golf at Delaware State Park, and a great campground to utilize when you rent an RV in Galena.

Chillicothe is a small city south of Columbus where you can bring your Galena camper rental to see the famous Hopewell Culture National Historical Park which contains some of the country’s oldest structures on record. The massive earthen mound edifices dominate the landscape and provide valuable insight into the ancient Hopewell culture that presided over the land of Ohio thousands of years before settlers arrived. Cuyahoga Valley National Park is the state’s only national park, but it sure is one you cannot miss. This exquisite park is just south of Cleveland, and is full of breathtaking scenery, geological oddities, intense canyon formations, and majestic waterfalls nestled into small coves.

City Sightseeing

While Galena is much too small to have the sort of attractions you might expect, don’t let this discourage you from exploring the area when you rent an RV. The nearby town of Westerville contains the Inniswood Metro Gardens, a refuge from the urban sprawl and city noise. This incredible garden setting has towering bamboo forests, small babbling brooks, ornate walking paths crafted from cobblestone, and a bevy of lovely animals like hummingbirds and butterflies. Highlands Aquatic Park is a fantastic place for families with small children to go, with several pools, diving areas, waterslides, and more fun features to keep you entertained and refreshed.

Columbus too has some pretty awesome attractions if you don't mind driving to the big city. The Ohio History Center covers a wide swath of history dating back to the ice ages to describe the geological phenomena that shaped present-day Ohio. Artifacts and items belonging to the indigenous peoples as well as the settlers from the east can be found on display as well. The Value City Arena is home to many concerts, performances, expositions, and sporting events, and functions as the main event center in Columbus. You can watch a Columbus Blue Jackets professional ice hockey game at the arena any time from October to June.

RV Parks to Visit

There are several campgrounds within driving distance of Galena that provide visitors a safe and cozy place to stay overnight during their travels. Tree Haven Campground has hundreds of shaded camping spots for you to choose from, as well as a convenience store on site to purchase camping supplies, and an in-ground pool open from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Berkshire Lake Campground also has an in-ground pool in addition to a mini golf course for kids, a bar and restaurant for parties, a playscape, and a small fishing lake. Sunbury/Columbus North KOA has a rustic barn for weddings and other upscale events. The KOA campground also has a heated pool, a fitness center, a buffet style restaurant, an old-fashioned country-style convenience store, and a petting zoo.

Cross Creek Camping Resort is located across Alum Creek Lake but may be worth the extra driving to get there. This resort has planned activities, live music every weekend, and quite a few amenities.
