Franktown is a city in Douglas County, Colorado and is the designated county seat. It originated in 1859, being named “Frank's Town” after the first settler to the area, James Frank Gardner. The name was officially changed to Franktown in 1961. By the early 1860s, stockades had been built to protect the community from Indian and Confederate soldier raids. The city organized its school district in 1865 and established its graveyard sometime before 1875 when it had its first burial. It also supplied timber to Denver and much of early Colorado, as well as the Kansas Pacific and Denver Rio Grande railroads. One of Franktown's historic structures is the Rock Ridge Ranch Barn, one of the last existing structures made by pegged, post and beam construction (a type of construction where wooden beams are fitted together at the corners like jigsaw puzzles). This type of construction ended with the invention of the wire nail around 1900.

Search for an RV in Douglas County and you are ready to begin exploring a state filled with magnificent geographic environments. There are other cities that might also be of interest and worth seeing while you are here. Colorado Springs was founded in 1871 by General William Jackson Palmer as a Victorian spa resort town. Monument was, in its early years, home to a company that sold ice blocks to keep food fresh. Castle Rock came into existence when one of its first homesteaders gifted 120 of his 160 acres on the condition that it be given its present-day name. Littleton began with the Gold Rush of 1859 and was incorporated as the town of Littleton in 1890. Denver was named after Kansas Territorial Governor James Denver by General William H. Larimer, who claimed the land, divided it into plots and laid out the city, not knowing at the time that Mr. Denver had already resigned his office. Your Franktown travel trailer rental is your invitation to explore the history and culture of the area.

Discover Franktown

The Great Outdoors

Castlewood Canyon State Park is an environmentally diverse nature preserve, with hiking trails, rock climbing walls, picnicking areas, and more. Trails are easy to moderately difficult, and some may have wooden bridges to cross. It is a perfect setting for nature and wildlife observing and photography. Visitors can observe the Castlewood Dam which burst in 1933, and nesting raptors (depending on the season). The park is open from sunrise to sunset; both inbound and outbound gates are locked promptly at sunset.

Rock Park is a smallish venue providing opportunities to hike and observe nature. The trails are clearly marked and there are benches and portable restrooms along the way. The park has a picnic pavilion and a picnic table at the summit where hikers can reward themselves with a 360-degree view of the surrounding countryside. Pack your lunch and head to the summit or enjoy it at the foot of the park in your Franktown RV trailer rental with scenic views of where you've been.

Slightly northwest and southwest of Rock Park, visitors will find Philip S. Miller Park. Miller Park, established in 2013, is an important destination for family events such as concerts. It is also an open recreational area with hiking trails, an indoor aquatic center, and an 18-hole golf simulator. Those who would prefer fresh air and the real deal could head to the nearby golf course, which in addition to a full round, offers custom golf club fitting, lessons and a clubhouse grill for that important post-game snack.

RV Parks

There are a number of RV parks and campgrounds within a short distance of Franktown. Your Franktown camper rental is the perfect addition to any of them to guarantee an enjoyable vacation.

Chatfield State Park has an RV campground with some full hookup sites; the rest are electricity only. The park has restrooms and showers, laundry facilities, and much more. The park is open all year round and some sites have pull-through access; some sites are for tent camping and there are bunny rabbits on site.

Colorado Heights Camping Resort is an RV park with restrooms, showers, and laundry facilities. It is child and dog-friendly, with a playground and swimming pool for the children, and a rec room for the adults. Individual sites have full hookups, Wi-Fi, and pull-through and big rig access.

Exploring The City

There is a lot to see and do in and around Franktown, but those who need a break can check out the shopping malls which have a good variety of store types (rather than just multiple venues selling the same things). If you still haven't had enough adrenaline for one day, there are sports complexes and entertainment centers (some of which have paintball courses). You can also relax enjoying custom beers at some of the local breweries or take in a traditional theater show.

When the dinner bell rings, there is a good selection of restaurants on hand. Most of these are locally owned and operated with a few commercial chains thrown into the mix. An Indian eatery has a good varied menu; if you find yourself here, don't miss the chicken coconut soup. Another restaurant, specializing in Italian food, has pizza and pasta on its menu, while yet another focuses on Mexican food, including a carne asada with flavored rice. Portions are large and there is no shame in taking home what you can't eat for a late night snack in the Franktown motorhome rental.

If you are in the mood for experimenting, try putting together your own feast in the kitchen of your Franktown luxury RV rental. Vacation is the perfect time to try new recipes or fine-tune old ones when the day-to-day pressures are suddenly absent; then enjoy it in your lawn chairs under a star-filled sky, a perfect end to a perfect day.
