Fort Morgan is both the county seat of Morgan County, as well as the most populous city in the county. The town was one of the very first non-native encampments in the state of Colorado and part of the Overland Trail, an alternative trail to the Mormon and Oregon Trails that helped ferry settlers to the West Coast from out east. The trail was in use until the arrival of the First Transcontinental Railroad, making the stagecoach trail obsolete. Since the stagecoach trail no longer needed a military fort to ensure the safety of travelers and transported goods, the fort was abandoned and, in its place, a town was born. The town of Fort Morgan was officially incorporated in 1887.

When you book an RV in Fort Morgan, you can enjoy the two distinct faces of Colorado with the majestic mountains to the west and the grand prairies and great plains in the east. The steady climb in elevation from the easternmost reaches of Colorado to Denver at the foot of the Rocky Mountains is an exciting journey as soon as the infamous peaks appear on the horizon. Interstate 76 connects Fort Morgan to the Centennial State’s capital city, making it exceptionally easy to find and get to.

Discover Fort Morgan

Explore the Outdoors

Eastern Colorado is vastly different than the mountains that people are accustomed to hearing about in the central and western regions but it has a unique type of beauty. Large sprawling grasslands blanket the area around Fort Morgan, giving it a surreal and wide-open appearance. Jackson Lake State Park is an extraordinary place you can visit that is close to town and can accommodate your Fort Morgan camper rental. There, the South Platte River has been dammed to create a lovely reservoir that is home to many recreational activities like fishing, boating, swimming, and even birdwatching. The lakefront campground is an ideal place to camp out in your Fort Morgan luxury motorhome rental, with incredible views and peaceful surroundings. North Sterling State Park is a similar park northeast of Fort Morgan, with a gigantic reservoir with plenty of fish to catch. You can walk six miles of trails circling the lake, go for a boat ride, or go camping when you rent an RV and bring it to the lakeside camping sites of North Sterling State Park.

Pawnee National Grassland is a wonderful spot to check out in the northern border of Colorado. The grassland is full of interesting rocky buttes jutting out from the ground, making for some interesting photos and great climbing. Clay barrens, shrub steppes, shortgrass prairies, and many other tiny ecosystem varieties exist at the park, as it is an important natural environment for many types of plants and wildlife. There are no places to camp out in at the grasslands, unfortunately, but this shouldn’t stop you from visiting the park in your Fort Morgan camper rental and checking out the dreamy night skies full of planets and stars from distant reaches of the cosmos.

Although it is a few hours west of Fort Morgan, it would be a shame to miss out on Rocky Mountain National Park, one of the most divine instances of natural beauty in the entire country. Over four and a half million people visit Rocky Mountain National Park each year to catch a glimpse of the elegant peaks and majestic mountain tops that it has become famous for. Depending on what season it is, you might have a vastly different experience, but no matter what time of year it is, you will surely be impressed. Hiking through sublime fields of wildflowers to hidden waterfalls, or snowshoeing across serene snowscapes, Rocky Mountain National Park is one of the very best places you could possibly bring your Fort Morgan RV rental by owner.

RV Parks to Visit

When you choose to rent an RV in Fort Morgan, there are a few options open to you as far as overnight camping is concerned. Country Comfort Motel and RV Park is a safe bet with places to stay indoors or outdoors in your Fort Morgan camper rental. The park is small and can only accommodate a few RVs at a time.

Emerald RV Park is a place to stay just outside of town, with no frills but all of the basic necessities. The town of Blush adjacent to Fort Morgan has a municipal campground that guests may use for short-term stays, with all the basic amenities and a town pool that is open to the public.

North Sterling State Park and Jackson Lake State Park are also decent places to camp although they are farther away. They may not have the luxury amenities you might be looking for, but what they lack in resort-like features, they surely make up for in peace, quiet, and amazing views.

City Sightseeing

Fort Morgan is no Denver or Fort Collins but it holds a few treasures worth taking a look at when you rent an RV in town. The Sherman Street National Historic District is one of the central features in town, with several historic homes built over 100 years ago. These charming homes are still in pristine shape and paint a picture of what early Fort Morgan once looked like. The Rainbow Bridge was also built a long time ago. The bridge is used to cross over the South Platte River, with fabulous views of the wide-open prairie and the raging river beneath it.

Fort Morgan Museum is the best resource in the county for learning about its interesting past. A wealth of information can be gleaned from this institution covering a great deal of different historical periods. There are exhibits concerning the Great Plains natives that once nomadically roamed the area in search for buffalos, as well as the first settlers to arrive in the state. There is even a small section of the museum dedicated to Glenn Miller, a famous jazz musician that was born and raised in Fort Morgan.
