Founded near the end of the 19th century, Florissant is a tiny mountain town on Highway 24, between the settlements of Lake George and Divide. It’s a relatively short drive from Denver, making it the perfect place to rent an RV if you want to get away from the crowds and the traffic of the big city, while still being within day-tripping distance of the metropolis.
When you book an RV in Florissant you’ll have the opportunity to see a historic mining town from Colorado’s glory days without all the tourist attractions that usually pop up around them. The Gold Belt Byway runs from Florissant through some fantastic Gold Rush-era towns like Canon City and Cripple Creek. Most of it consists of dirt roads, but if you’ve got the time and a suitable travel trailer rental in Florissant, this is an excellent expedition to take if you’re a fan of historical sites.
If you’re unable to take a trip out on those back roads, stop in at the Pikes Peak Historical Society just outside of town. The visitors center offers a comprehensive history of the Florissant area and Pikes Peak.
One of the best places to get some outdoor recreation when you get a camper rental in Florissant is Mueller State Park. This massive undeveloped area just south of town has dozens of miles of trail running through alpine forests to rocky overlooks; it is the place to go for some great hiking. For watersports, head over to Lake George, a short drive to the west. Kayak rentals are available from on the marina on its shore and the fishing is fantastic if you have a Colorado fishing license.
A little farther away is Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument, which offers visitors some of the best opportunities for fossil sighting in the world. While you can learn about paleontology and fossils at hundreds of museums around the country, rarely do you get to see so many of them in their natural environment. It’s believed that a pretty unique geological event involving volcanic ash and microorganisms living in the lake that once covered this area led to perfect fossilization of any animals that died in the region about 34 million years ago.
If you’re looking for an exhilarating hiking adventure though, head to Crystal Peak just outside of the ski town of Breckenridge. While not quite one of Colorado’s famed “Fourteeners” it's only about 100 feet short of it and provides some of the best views of the Florissant region.
This section of the Rocky Mountains is popular with tourists, so you should have no trouble finding a place to park your rig when you choose an RV rental in Florissant. Lake George Cabins and RV Park is just a short trip away and sites there have full hookups, fire rings, picnic tables, and there is even a small library of books and board games available on site. Another option near Lake George is the Travel Port Campground, which is a little quieter and more remote but still has full hookups for your motorhome rental in Florissant.
For something a little more rustic, check out Riverside Campground on the South Platte River where the steep granite walls of Eleven Mile Canyon provide a beautiful backdrop for your campsite. Sites at this campground have no hookups, but drinking water is available nearby. Mueller State Park also has quite a few sites with just electrical hookups but be sure to reserve early as they can fill up quite fast during peak season. If you were okay with no-amenities camping, a final option would be the Walmart in Woodland Park. With manager permission, you might be able to stay here for a couple of nights.
Being a remote mountain town, most of the activities in Florissant are focused around outdoor recreation. If you’re looking for some city attractions you’ll probably want to head to Lake George not too far down the road. There are more little shops to browse and good restaurants to visit there.
If you’re still searching for more fossil-related activities after visiting Fossil Beds National Monument, stop in at the Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center in Woodland Park. They have a working fossil lab that is visible to museum visitors along with full-size skeletons of some of the most well-known dinosaur species. If you’re bringing the little ones along on your Florissant vacation, this one is a perennial favorite with the kids.
Animal lovers will appreciate a day trip to the Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center. The center offers guided tours of its facilities that are home to dozens of wolves and wolf hybrids. While visitors are encouraged to interact with the animals, and many say that petting and playing with these majestic creatures is their favorite part of the trip, the nonprofit has a conservation focus centered on keeping wolves wild and minimizing their encounters with humans.
