Flint, Michigan is located along the Flint River 66 miles from Detroit, 55 miles from Lansing and 38 miles south of Saginaw. Incorporated in 1855, it has grown to be the seventh largest city in Michigan and the fourth largest metropolitan area. It was founded in 1819 by a fur trader and became a major lumbering area. In the 19th and 20th centuries, it was a leading manufacturer of carriages and automobiles and has been nicknamed “Vehicle City” for that reason. General Motors began in Flint in 1908 and centered their Buick and Chevrolet Divisions in the city until the early 1980’s. It was the center of events leading to the formation of the United Auto Workers.

Many sports celebrities got their start in Flint; over 20 players in the NFL started out here, along with nine in Major League Baseball, and 11 players in the NBA. That’s pretty impressive! Filmmaker Michael Moore is also from Flint; as is the well-known radio personality Casey Kasem, and game show host Bob Eubanks. Let’s not forget the popular 60’s band, Grand Funk Railroad, that got their big start in this city as well! This area has a lot to offer a curious explorer in a Flint RV rental, that’s for sure.
