Set on the border between Missouri and Illinois is the small, riverside town of Festus. This town has the perfect balance between natural beauty and modern convenience, ideal for those who have an RV rental in Missouri. Its beauty lies in its proximity to the meandering Mississippi River and Mark Twain National Park laden with ancient oak pines and volcanic mountains. Its convenience lies in its close vicinity to the state capital of Jefferson City as well as the river city of St Louis.

Starting its life as part of Crystal City, Festus was technically not recognized until the late 1800’s. During this time, a search was underway to find land containing valuable minerals in Missouri. As a result of the mineral bounty, a booming glass factory was established in Crystal City, boosting the areas economy and bringing even more people there. In fact, the town grew so rapidly, that it was split into two communities, the second known as Tanglefoot and, later, as Festus.

Today the city boasts plenty of recreational and educational activities, some of which preserve the cities rich heritage. Book an RV rental in Festus, to learn more about this fascinating region!

The Great Outdoors

Missouri is an absolute mecca for lovers of the great outdoors, and Festus is no exception to this rule. As well as several local, well-maintained parks within the parameters of the city, the town is within driving distance of the great Mississippi River as well as a huge national park.

If you want to stay local, there are over eight parks in the city, which equate to around 200 acres of green space. West City Park, just a ten-minute drive out is considered to be the most popular. This huge park, with a plethora of different sporting fields, a peaceful lake, and several walking trails, is perfect for anyone hoping for a leisurely walk, competitive game or scenic bike ride.

Alternatively, head to Sunset Park, a short walk away from the center of town. Despite its central location, this park provides the perfect peaceful location to spend a summer’s day. The small river that runs through the park is a great spot for some gentle fishing, while the bird sanctuary provides the perfect opportunity for a spot of bird watching.

If you have a camper rental in Festus and want to make the most out of the great outdoors, the Mark Twain National Forest is less than a one-hour drive away! Covering over 1.5 million acres, vacationers can expect to see huge natural springs, endless networks of caves, ancient volcanic mountains, and an abundance of meandering streams. Hike, canoe, kayak, horseback ride, or mountain bike your way through this blissful park! As Missouri’s only national park, this is must visit when visiting this picturesque state.

RV Parks

When you rent a motorhome in Festus, some of the closest RV parks can be found closer towards St Louis. As well as a well-maintained KOA, offering campers its usual fair of full amenities and all the extras, campers will find a whole host of family-run campgrounds. The Covered Bridge RV Park is a great option for anyone passing through who needs to park up for a couple of nights. Although there are no communal showers, the park does offer full hook-ups with every large spacious site!

If you have chosen to spend some time at the Mark Twain National Forest, there are also plenty of campgrounds in this area, although amenities will generally be a little more basic.

Heading out of Festus, along Route 67, will take you past a number of campgrounds on the way to the national forest. Cherokee Landing sits perfectly between the two locations and even has a couple of sites with full hook-ups! Located on the banks of a river, it is also a great spot for a day of canoeing or kayaking! Make sure to call ahead before arriving, as spaces are very limited here.

Exploring the City

Despite being a small town, Festus is a great place to grab a delicious meal and indulge in a bit of shopping therapy. With countless restaurants dotted along the high street, visitors can choose from any cuisine ranging from Mexican to Japanese. Furthermore, shopping is not limited to just the main strip! Head to one of Festus’ out-of-town shopping malls for an extensive array of shops, suited for any budget!

Opting for an RV rental in Festus will provide you the opportunity to take a self-guided tour of the wineries dotted around the hills of Jefferson County. With long hot summers and fertile mountainous soil, the climate in Missouri is ideal for growing a selection of grape varieties. The beauty of the wineries in this region lies in the fact that they are all relatively small, family-run businesses. As a result, the service and hospitality you receive in these smaller wineries is much more intimate. Not only will you leave with an enhanced knowledge of the wine in the region but possibly a new friend to keep in touch with! Villa Antonio Winery comes highly recommended in the area, with its wine being likened to those that are produced in Northern Italy.

A short trip into the larger city of St Louis will expand your cultural sightseeing options in the city dramatically. The city is home to a whole array of museums; The Magic House Museum, The Butterfly House, The History Museum, and so many more. The City Museum, with a variety of creative and interactive exhibitions, comes the most highly recommended as a fantastic day out for the whole family. Their intriguing motto that reads ‘expect the unexpected’ says it all!

If you are looking for your next adventure, consider an RV rental in Festus. Get out and enjoy the miles of caves, a huge national forest, and beautifully warm summers. Rent an RV in Festus, MO, and go exploring!
