Ferndale is a smaller city in Oakland County, Michigan. The area around Ferndale was first settled by farmers in the early 1800's; the invention of automobiles and assembly production lines was followed by people immigrating to larger cities to work, and Ferndale's population increased as a result.

In 1918, it was incorporated as a village, then as a city in 1927. From 1920 to 1950, it experienced its biggest growth in housing; its amenities (elementary schools, city parks, churches, community social involvement and downtown core) made it a popular suburban community with families. Nine Mile Road, Ferndale's downtown shopping area, was very successful from the 1940's to 1960's but then declined. Recent reconstruction of this area has reduced car traffic; the addition of bicycle lanes and the return of pedestrian traffic have bolstered commercial activities, and restored the shopping core's success.

Book an RV in Ferndale and you’ll find it’s the perfect base for a walking tour of the town, which is a perfect size for casually strolling while you create some wonderful memories. Other cities within easy reach of Ferndale are Pontiac, Warren, Detroit, Westland and Farmington, and your RV rental in Ferndale MI is the perfect way to get there.

Discover Ferndale

The Great Outdoors

As a virtual suburb of Detroit, Ferndale is close to the vast lakes of Michigan. It’s also close to the border with Canada. While you’re in this part of the world, you owe it to yourself to visit the majestic Niagara Falls. This iconic waterfall on the U.S. - Canada border is a truly awe-inspiring sight, and no picture does justice to it. While there, take a ride on a boat that will carry you right to the base of the towering falls. Or for a different kind of thrill, you could visit the many casinos that have sprung up in this tourist destination.

Red Oaks Waterpark, around 7 miles from Ferndale, is an enormous waterpark with a wave action pool, moving river and triple slide. Separate pools are available for younger children and toddlers, and there are areas for enjoying a picnic lunch. The water areas are all heated and have state trained lifeguards on duty. Keep your best RV rental in Ferndale nearby and prepare your lunch for enjoying in the picnic areas.

The Detroit Zoo is another good way to feel nature without having to travel too far. This 125 acre paradise is home to exotic animals such as gorillas, chimpanzees, and rhinoceros. It’s a great option for a day trip, especially if you have kids traveling with you.

RV Parks

There are no RV parks, resorts or campgrounds in Ferndale, but there are a small number not too far away. Your motorhome rental in Ferndale makes for a pleasant place to stay in any one of these sites.

Addison Oaks County Park is around 25 miles north of Ferndale and has 174 sites with pull through access, gravel and cement pads, water, 30/50 amp electricity but no sewer. The campground is big rig friendly and has restrooms and showers, laundry facilities, wifi, and a lake and marina.

Pontiac Lake Recreation Area is roughly 20 miles northwest and has 176 sites. The sites have 30 amp electricity only, no 50 amp, water or sewer, and there is no wifi in the park. However, it does have restrooms and showers, a playground for the kids, and there is a dump site where tanks can be easily emptied. Best of all, there is a lake and a beach about one mile from the campground. The campground itself is a little on the basic side, but the tranquil location makes it a great spot to park your RV rental near Ferndale.

Exploring The City

Those who like the nightlife will be happy to know that there are a number of nightclubs in Ferndale, including one genuine saloon and three Irish pubs. There are two comedy clubs, one of which is improv, and a third club in nearby Royal Oak. Houdini afficionadoes will probably enjoy visiting the escape rooms (there is one in Ferndale and two more in Royal Oak). There is a bowling alley that offers families a smoke free environment with optional bumper lanes, food service and a video arcade area, and an art gallery for those free of children.

When hunger strikes, Ferndale doesn't disappoint. Prices range from cheap eats and moderately priced venues to fine dining outlets. There is a better than average range of cuisines to choose from, such as Lebanese, Thai, Mediterranean, Italian and Ethiopian. Diners can find cajun-creole cuisine, oyster and seafood restaurants, diners serving all day breakfast, craft breweries with food service and more. Most of the local restaurants are vegan and vegetarian friendly, just remember to inquire when you arrive. When you realize that the meal is bigger than your appetite, ask to have it wrapped up and take it back to your RV trailer rental in Ferndale for a midnight snack (just make sure the kids don't get to it before you do).

Don't forget that your luxury RV rental Ferndale is also a kitchen on wheels, and groceries can be easily found. Bon appetit!
