Fairmont’s early days weren’t well-built ones. This mid-sized West Virginia city fell victim to poorly constructed buildings and a fire in the late 1800s. While it could have been easily left to decay, Fairmont rallied and began a decade long rebuilding process that brought more residents to the area. The city soon played an important middleman stopping point for trains heading between Cumberland, MD and Wheeling, WV and became a leading coal provider.

Book a luxury rental RV to Fairmont to explore a city that rose from the ashes and is still thriving to this day. The city provides beautiful views of the Monongahela River, a river formed by the joining of the Tygart Valley and West Fork rivers. Take full advantage of its lively metropolitan atmosphere with hidden forest oases sprinkled throughout.

The Great Outdoors

The Fairmont area provides a few smaller public parks perfect for a quick outing with children or a stroll to stretch the legs if you’ve been driving your rental RV all day. Most of the parks have large secure playground areas and paved walking and biking paths. Depending on the park, you’ll also be able to find disc golf courses, sports facilities, and mini golf. Fairmont does its best to encourage residents and visitors alike to get outside and play.

If the day(s) you happen to be cruising through the area in your Fairmont camper rental are exceptionally nice, Prickett’s Fort State Park is five miles north of the city. Prickett’s Fort originally served as a refuge during colonial times and the property features a reconstruction of what 18th-century life was like for a Virginian. Visiting the park is free but the attractions onsite do charge admission. If you’re penny-pinching this RV rental trip through here, Prickett’s free activities include hiking and biking trails that take you through the rail-trail system along the river and fishing areas.

While out in this area of West Virginia, you might as well utilize the other nearby state parks that are within a 40-minute drive of the city. Coopers Rock State Forest in Bruceton Mills and Tygart Lark State Park in Grafton offer beautiful scenery and ample motivation to get out there. Coopers Rock is known for its plethora of hiking opportunities through a mostly undisturbed forest as well as biking trails available for all skill levels. And, local outfitters provide guided rafting trips on the Cheat River. Tygart Lake sits at the base of the Allegheny Mountains and is mostly recognized for its access to Tygart Lake. If getting out on the water is most important to you, this might just be the spot to check out when passing through north-central West Virginia with your Fairmont travel trailer rental.

RV Parks

Being that Fairmont is a city area, you won’t be able to find much right in the downtown area. But, just outside the limits and still within Fairmont boundaries, you do have a couple overnight camping spots available to you. Swisher Hill Campground is a great option for those traveling with a Fairmont RV rental since they’re open year round. Each campsite includes full hookups for your RV, free WiFi, and access to the playground, basketball courts, and picnic areas. New to the full hookup offering scene is Sagebrush Round-Up. That’s right; they’re now able to accommodate all RVs. They also host a weekly country music show, if you’re into that sort of thing.

But, if you value a legitimate outdoors camping experience over staying right in Fairmont, Coopers Rock State Forest does have campgrounds available with electrical hookups and WiFi. Additionally, you’ll have admittance to the whole park and the bathhouse. Coopers Rock allows leashed pets too!

Exploring the City

Fairmont is a charming city with some funky spots that are sure to draw interest. You’ll find the Telephone Museum discreetly set up in an old brick building. Very enthusiastic guides are happy to take you around the museum and share their knowledge about telephones through the years. And, furthering this antique theme, Sweet Memories Antique Mall is filled with signs, toys, and more from throughout the decades. You could say that Fairmont cherishes history.

For adults looking to casually explore the area over some tasty food and adult beverages, swing by Heston Farms should suit your needs. The 220-acre farm takes its guests through the farm life. Enjoy tours, farm-to-table food, live music, and of course whiskey or wine tastings. A beautiful spot for a fair-weathered evening.

Speaking of farms, Fairmont hosts a rather popular farmers market on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Palatine Park. Browse through all the locally sourced fresh produce and other handmade goods.

Should it be the West Virginia hospitality you are seeking, consider a camper rental in Fairmont. Walk along a hiking trail, enjoy a picnic in the park and just take in the Fairmont atmosphere. Rent a luxury motorhome rental in Fairmont, and enjoy.
