Have you ever thought about visiting the nation’s capital, but were worried that it would be too crowded or difficult to get around? When you book an RV in Fairfax, just 17 miles to the west of D.C., it’s a great way to see the capital’s many sights (and a number of attractions in Fairfax, too), while still being far enough away to have a relaxing vacation.

Hoping to leave that big Fairfax motorhome rental back at the park? You’re in luck as the D.C. metro has an excellent public transportation system that can take you from Fairfax to downtown in just under an hour and a half. Parking in the city can be a nightmare and cost a fortune, so leaving your Fairfax RV rental behind is probably for the best.

RV Parks Near Fairfax

Even a dozen or so miles from the Washington Mall, Fairfax is still inside the dense metropolitan area of Washington D.C. That means it can be difficult to find a place to camp for the night with your Fairfax rental RV. One of the closest places is Burke Lake Campground, about 15 minutes south of Fairfax. Sites are limited and none of them have water or electrical hookup, but use of the dump station is included with a stay. Clean drinking water is available though, as are showers. Another option is Lake Fairfax Park, which is around 20 minutes north of the city. Sites have electrical hookups and a dump station is nearby. Hot showers and drinking water can also be found in the park’s common area. A final option, if you’re willing to drive a little farther, is Pohick Bay Regional Campground, about a 30-minute drive to the south on the banks of Chesapeake Bay. Sites have electrical hookups and a dump station nearby along with hot showers.

Fortunately, if you need to stock up on supplies for your Fairfax camper rental trip, there’s a Walmart located on the city’s western edge.

Exploring the City of Fairfax

Washington D.C. may have the monuments (Washington, Lincoln, and Jefferson) and world-class museums (the Smithsonian), but that doesn’t mean there are not tons of great things to see right here in Fairfax. One of the most popular museums to visit is actually the National Rifle Association Firearms Museum, as the organization’s headquarters are in Fairfax. You can see all sorts of guns here, from the rifles of the Revolutionary War to a full-sized Gatling Gun. It’s a trip through history that highlights how firearms have shaped America from its beginnings into the country that it is today. If you’re looking for another dose of history though, check out the Fairfax Museum, which focuses on the city’s role during the Civil War.

If you consider yourself a shopaholic, you must get over to the Fair Oaks Mall, which has everything from clothing to homewares to fancy new gadgets. There’s also the Fairfax Corner shopping center, which has dozens of smaller specialty shops. However, if you need something to bring home as a delicious souvenir or gift, you’ll need to check out Artisan Confections, which makes some of the best truffles and caramels in the area.

For the traveling family, seeing a movie is always a great way to bring everyone together. The Cinema Arts Theater runs both Hollywood blockbusters and low-key indie flicks, so there should be something for everyone there.

Getting Outside Near Fairfax

When you book a Fairfax rental RV, you’ll open up the possibilities for outdoor adventure, letting you sleep wherever you wish, while still having all the amenities of home. Despite being such a densely populated urban area, there’s still plenty of places where you can get back to nature and enjoy some time outside near Fairfax. In the nearby city of Reston, you can rent paddle boards to use for a couple of hours on Lake Anne.

For a high-flying adventure though, head to Springfield, seven miles outside of Fairfax, to try out zipline and obstacle courses.

However, if hitting up the golf course is on your vacation itinerary, grab a tee time at one of the local golf courses. And if you prefer the putt-putt version of golf, there’s also a miniature golf course a few miles away in Oakton.

However, one of the best things about an RV rental near Fairfax is the potential for seeing attractions outside the city that wouldn’t be possible without your own set of wheels. Shenandoah National Park is only an hour’s drive outside of Fairfax. Traveling down Skyline Drive along the ridges of the Blue Mountains is a favorite pastime for visitors, especially those coming during the fall months when the leaves are changing. There are also hiking trails to suit all fitness levels and most of the trailheads are right off the main road.
