Eureka is a city in southeastern Kansas and the county seat of Greenwood County. Wichita is just about an hour’s drive west of Eureka, and Kansas City and the city of Lawrence are approximately two hours’ drive northeast. The Great Outdoors

Exploring the City

The Greenwood County Historical Society is a museum located in the center of Eureka, where you can learn about the county’s history and notable citizens. The society is making an effort to help people of the county find their origins through census records, an obituary file, cemetery records, and family information files. They also have a large microfilm library consisting of newspapers and census records.

Kansas Oil Museum is just a short drive from Eureka. The focus of this museum is on the history of America’s oil industry in the early 20th century. The museum also preserves and interprets the history of the region, Native American history, and early settler history. Here you can see seasonal and permanent exhibits, which are indoors and outdoors. Check out oil field equipment and a historic oil boom town while you’re here.

Coutts Museum of Art is also nearby. Here you can see exhibits of local and international artists, as well as permanent exhibits. They also organize educational programs and art classes, like painting, sculpture, photography, and drawing. In the evening, you can often listen to live music and enjoy wonderful shows.
