Estelline is about a third of the way between Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Fargo, North Dakota on Interstate 29. It’s a place that doesn’t see too many visitors, with the main attraction being the excellent fishing at nearby Lake Poinsett.

When you book an RV in Estelline, you may need to spend some time on the road to reach the area's points of interest. Most of the attractions will be in towns that are at least half an hour's drive from Estelline. The vast expanses of eastern South Dakota are the perfect place for long road trips though, with nothing but the open road ahead.

Discover Estelline

The Great Outdoors

The most popular outdoor attractions near Estelline are the dozens of lakes that dot the grasslands surrounding it. Boat rentals are generally only available in larger towns like Sioux City though, so you’ll be limited to shore fishing and swimming if you’re not up for a road trip to find a boat.

Hiking trails are also harder to find in the eastern part of the state; however, Oakwood Lakes State Park is close by and has a few paths connecting a set of glacial lakes. You won’t get a lot of elevation out of these hikes, but they’re perfect for wildlife spotting.

If you’re up for a longer excursion, consider a trip west to the Missouri River near the town of Chamberlain. This is one of the best places to learn about the exploits of Lewis and Clark and their Corps of Discovery in the early 19th century, and there are several great trails along the river that are worth exploring. You can also rent a canoe or kayak and travel the historical route for yourself.

RV Parks

Finding a place to camp when you choose an RV rental in Estelline can be a bit of a challenge, and there’s a good chance you’ll need to drive some distance to reach it. Sexauer Park Campground in the town of Brookings is one of the closest options and is about half an hour's drive from Estelline. Sites at Sexauer have electrical hookups, drinking water, picnic tables and a dump station for your motorhome rental from Estelline. Brookings is halfway between Estelline and Sioux Falls, making it a solid camping option if you’re thinking of splitting your time between the two.

The campground at Lake Poinsett Recreation Area also has several good campsites, and some of them even have electrical hookups. The main attraction is the fishing in Lake Poinsett, but there’s also a disc golf course, basketball court, and a few short hiking trails. This is one of the better places to stay when you get an RV rental in Estelline, SD if you like a more rustic camping experience, close to nature.

Ulven City Park and Campground in the town of Clear Lake is also worth checking out if you like camping near the water. They have several RV sites adjacent to a large tract of wetlands, making these sites excellent for birdwatchers.

Exploring the City

With Estelline being so small, it can be hard to find attractions in town, though there are a few restaurants on Main Street. Most visitors getting a travel trailer rental in Estelline will spend their time in some of the nearby towns like Brookings. The South Dakota State Agriculture Heritage Museum is one of the more popular attractions there, with lots of antique farm implements (some of them were invented in South Dakota), exhibits focused on ranching from the pioneer era to the present, and information about South Dakota State University, which was founded here as a land grant college in the latter half of the 19th century.

Those choosing to rent an RV during the month of July will want to check out the Brookings Summer Arts Festival, which draws hundreds of artists from across the country to display their creations; there are also dozens of excellent food vendors and craft tables to peruse.

If you’re bringing younger kids along when you get a camper rental in Estelline, you’ll almost certainly want to stop by the Children’s Museum of South Dakota, which is also in Brookings. Even though it’s located in a fairly small town, it has loads of great exhibits where the little ones can do things like excavate dinosaur bones, explore a climbing net, and try on clothes from exciting periods in our nation’s history. For summer visits, you might also want to take them to cool off at the waterpark in Brookings. It’s an indoor waterpark though, so it’s actually suitable for swimming year-round.
