There aren't many cities smaller than Engelhard, a small fishing community on the Pamlico Sound in North Carolina. This charming village has existed since 1711, and prior to that, was occupied by Native Americans. The village is named for Chief Engelhard, the leader of a nearby tribe.

Engelhard was known by the natives as “the land of many waters,” a fact that is not surprising when you rent an RV in town and see all the water that surrounds it, from the Pamlico Sound to the three national wildlife refuges to Lake Mattamuskeet, the largest lake in North Carolina. This charming locality is an ideal place to choose for your next vacation, just across the water from the famous Outer Banks area of North Carolina, visited by tons of tourists each year. Engelhard has a similar appeal to its barrier island counterparts across the Pamlico Sound, but with a fraction of the crowds, making it a peaceful place to vacation. When you book an RV in Engelhard, you can reach Greenville and Raleigh with a few hours of driving or less, so this location is quite accessible.

Discover Engelhard

The Great Outdoors

Lots of people head for the lush forests and pristine beaches of North Carolina each spring and summer, to enjoy some of the most enchanting outdoors areas on the East Coast. With an Engelhard camper rental, you’ll have the freedom to move about the area to customize the perfect itinerary for yourself, checking off the best state parks, national forests, wildlife refuges, and campgrounds on your list. Engelhard is surrounded by wildlife refuges, integral parts of the ecosystem designed to accommodate a wide range of wildlife. Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge is a 150,000-acre sanctuary where tons of migratory birds and woodland creatures are studied, preserved, and protected from human development. This particular refuge is world famous for its red wolf population, one of the only places they can be found in the world. Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge is minutes from town, encapsulating Lake Mattamuskeet, also full of animals like red wolves, black bears, white-tail deer, and bobcats.

Across the sound on the Outer Banks, you can get a true feel for this vacation paradise by stopping by Jockey's Ridge State Park, a pleasant beach area with lots to do. This delightful park in Nags Head is a fantastic place to bring your Engelhard campervan rental, with humongous dunes, vernal pools, coastal grasslands, and spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean. Guests like to comb the beach for seashells and driftwood, swim, surf, paddleboard, hike, and camp out along the shore. If you are feeling brave, you can hang glide from the top of the dunes, or opt instead to visit the lovely museum on-site, with cool information about the park’s natural history and the pirates who walked its shores.

The closest national forest to town is Croatan National Forest, named for a local tribe of natives. The sprawling park by the water has four separate wilderness areas with backcountry camping and hiking for all to enjoy. There are countless waterways, creeks, ponds, lakes, and estuaries to kayak and canoe in, and virgin longleaf pine forests to meander through. Even camping is possible when you find a quiet campground in the forest and spend the night here in the comfort of your Engelhard RV rental by owner.

RV Parks

There are lots of campgrounds to make use of in the area, and most of them are found across the Pamlico Sound on the barrier islands of North Carolina. Ocean Waves Campground could be a fantastic place to call home for a few days, with cooling sea breezes, a fully stocked camp store, a pool, and much more.

Hatteras Sands Campground is an upscale resort on the Outer Banks, with rental cottages and RV camping sites near the water. There is a pet park, and also a clubhouse for guests, an Olympic-size swimming pool, and lots of neat fishing areas within the park.

City Sightseeing

Engelhard is practically a one-road town, so aside from a few local restaurants, a hotel, and a church, you won’t find much excitement hanging out in the town itself. There are some unique old buildings to check out if you enjoy that sort of thing, like Wynne’s Folly, an old plantation house built in 1848. This Greek Revival style house is made from bricks and has been on the National Register of Historic Places for a few decades. Inkwell is another historic home by Lake Mattamuskeet, with a unique design resembling an octagon. This home is open a few times per year for tours, with divine apple orchards adorning its lands.

If you want more excitement, you can bring your Engelhard motorhome rental to the Outer Banks and learn a thing or two about the area in one of its many museums. The Wright Brothers National Monument is a wonderful structure erected in honor of the brothers who made powered flight possible. These two eccentric brothers from Ohio traveled to the beaches of Kitty Hawk to test their prototype airplane, achieving manned, powered flight for the first time in human history. The statue, the original hanger used to house the airplane, and several models built by the brothers are on display in the museum.

While you find yourself in Kitty Hawk, you can make use of your time by seeing the history museum at Jockey's Ridge State Park, or going fishing, dining, or shopping at one of the many piers jutting out into the ocean like Avalon Pier or Kitty Hawk Pier.
