Emmetsburg is a city in and the county seat of Palo Alto County, Iowa. It was originally settled by immigrants between 1845 and 1852 who were fleeing the Irish potato famine. It was named after the leader of the 1803 rebellion against Britain, nationalist Robert Emmet, who was executed as a young man for his actions. The colony was located a short distance from where Emmetsburg stands today, and the Palo Alto County Court House square has a statue of Robert Emmet. Needless to say, St. Patrick's Day is an important festival in Emmetsburg, one that it shares with its sister city, Dublin, Ireland.

Search for an RV in Palo Alto County, and you will be one step closer to experiencing the history and culture of this community first hand. While you are here, consider spending some time in other nearby communities to make the most of your vacation. Estherville is near the 1879 landing site of a 455-pound meteorite that was dubbed “the Estherville Meteorite;” fragments of the meteor are on display in Estherville, the Smithsonian Museum, and two other international locations. A statue of the meteor can be seen at the intersection of Iowa Highways 4 and 9. Algona was host to a WWII prisoner of war camp that housed thousands of German soldiers; many of the prisoners labored on farms owned by soldiers fighting the war in Europe. Pocahontas was the site of a 2011 outbreak of tornadoes, many of which touched down near the city; however, there were no injuries or fatalities due to an efficient early warning system. Spencer was home to an internationally famous cat, Dewey Readmore Books, who was immortalized in a book written by Spencer Library director Vicki Myron and Bret Witter.
