Elberton, Georgia is named for Samuel Elbert, an American war hero and politician that helped fight for independence during the Revolutionary War. Elberton is the county seat for Elbert County and the self-appointed “Granite Capital of the World.” The town is graced with this designation due to its granite-based economy that has churned out millions of tons of granite since the Civil War. Due to the granite industry, Elberton evolved into a major shipping and railroad hub out of necessity, so granite could be shipped around the East Coast.
These days, Elberton is a highly accessible vacation destination in northeastern Georgia, near the South Carolina-Georgia state line. There are railroad lines, state highways, and regional airports in or near town, so getting to Elberton to rent an RV is easy. Furthermore, you can reach nearby cities like Athens and Augusta with hardly any effort at all. Between the lively historic district and the area’s outstanding natural beauty, this charming small town proves to be a top-notch vacation destination, and that much will become clear when you book an RV in Elberton.
Elberton is blessed with stunning surroundings and a bevy of outdoor vacation spots that remain quite popular throughout the year. The summertime is an especially notable time to visit with an Elberton RV rental due to its proximity to Tate Lake and the Savannah River. Richard B Russell State Park is an exceptional outdoor area that sits on the Savannah River, which separates South Carolina and Georgia. This stellar recreation area is home to an 18-hole golf course, a lake with swimming beaches, picnic shelters, a large disc golf course, and a scenic campground where you can stay with your Elberton camper rental.
Calhoun Falls State Park is situated across the water on the South Carolina side of the state line. The park is home to boat ramps, tennis courts, picnic shelters, basketball hoops, equestrian trails, and a marina among other things. You can swim in the lake, fish for trout and bass, kayak, canoe, or take a boat out for a spin on the water. Hiking and biking are popular ways to get around the park using a variety of nature trails, and a campground with its own general store remains an option should you need a place to stay in your Elberton motorhome rental overnight.
Hart State Park is another one of many Georgia parks located on the Savannah River. The park is named for Nancy Hart, a local heroine and war hero who bravely fought for independence during the Revolutionary War. There are lots of activities to enjoy at this lovely little park, like water skiing, boating, swimming, fishing, tubing, biking, hiking, and camping. Additionally, there is a playground for children, a music theater capable of holding live concerts, rustic cabins, and picturesque beaches.
Georgia may not have any national parks to speak of, but it has a few national forests that are wonderful places to stop by and see when you find yourself in the area. Oconee National Forest and Chattahoochee National Forest are within an hour's drive from Elberton, so you’ll have some stellar options when formulating your itinerary. Chattahoochee National Forest is spread out along the northern border of Georgia in the North Georgia Mountains. There are ten wilderness areas scattered throughout the park and tons of recreation areas and campgrounds where you can spend your vacation.
When you need a place to stay, finding a safe and accommodating place to park your Elberton motorhome rental overnight is a breeze. The sheer number of natural parks and recreation areas in the area ensures that there are plenty of campgrounds and RV parks available to visitors. Pine-Der-Rosa RV Park & Campground offers rates for both long-term and short-term stays, with stunning lakefront views and a wide range of amenities. The park specializes in fishing and hunting, with guides and information available for outdoor enthusiasts to use.
Pine Lake Campground is another place to consider, with shaded, level camping spots to make use of. Park guests can utilize restrooms, laundry facilities, wireless internet, fishing spots, nature trails, and more.
The state parks are also good options for rustic camping with sublime natural beauty. These amazing public parks should be considered for their immense recreational activity potential, and it doesn't hurt to have a refreshing lake to swim in during the hot Georgia summer.
It might not be the largest town, but Elberton is quite an entertaining place to visit as far as tourism destinations go. The downtown shopping district alone is comprised of tasty eateries, boutique shops, and other quaint local businesses that line the main road. There are historic buildings in nearly every direction, and farmers markets are held throughout the week, further adding to the enchanting, small-town atmosphere. Elberton often refers to itself as the “Granite Capital of the World,” so it is only appropriate that there is an Elberton Granite Museum in town. An informative documentary video helps guests learn about the town’s love for granite, and three floors of photographs and artifacts help tell the complete story of Elberton with respect to its thriving granite industry.
The Georgia Guidestones are, interestingly enough, made from Elberton granite, much like several other local monuments. The Guidestones are referred to as the Stonehenge of the Americas, demarcating what is believed to be the center of the universe by the Cherokee native people. This lovely monolithic structure is formed with granite blocks and inscribed with words from many different languages.
The Elbert Theatre is an old movie palace from the early 20th century, now renovated and repurposed into being a community space, music venue, an arthouse movie theater, and a venue for other types of performances. The front facade of this unique building features iconic art deco architectural style, adding to its allure.
