Formerly known as “Raritan,” the community saw settlers in the area as early as the mid-1700s. Thomas Edison, the very one known for inventing a lightbulb, phonograph, and many other gadgets, set up his lab and home in the area in the late 1800s. He became known as the “Wizard of Menlo Park.” After his death in 1931, the town, needing to change its name to avoid confusion with an identically named town elsewhere in New Jersey, chose “Edison” to honor the prolific inventor.

In 1924, a manufacturer that produced volatile chemicals for WWI had a massive explosion that killed 20 people and destroyed several square miles around the factory.

Today, Edison, NJ, is a fast-growing community. It’s a unique “donut” town, in which the town’s boundaries completely surrounds another smaller one. There are only 21 known donut towns in the USA. Locals affectionately refer to this town as “the Diz.”

The Great Outdoors

This close to the Big Apple, suburban and bedroom communities seem to take up every square inch of northern New Jersey. However, there are several small wilderness parks dotting the area, and an Edison RV rental makes it easy to find them. The closest, Dismal Swamp is nicknamed the Everglades of New Jersey. It’s one of the last few wetlands in an urban location. Hundreds of different species of birds and wildlife make their homes in this park, such as green herons, endangered American bitterns, and endangered loggerhead shrikes. Though unofficially confirmed, sightings of the endangered grasshopper sparrows have been reported. Hikers, nature lovers, and photographers will enjoy this destination.

Sourland Mountain Preserve is a modest 4,000-acre park, one of the largest in northern New Jersey. The mature, tall trees and dense shrubbery muffle the sounds of city life, reducing it to a distant whisper. Several miles of trails winding through the woods offers plenty of hiking, biking, and horseback-riding fun. Rock-climbers are often spotted scaling gigantic boulders, which were deposited by the massive glacier as it receded north about 20,000 years ago.

An Edison camper rental makes it convenient to head out of town to hit a larger wilderness park. The Wharton State Forest, some 50 miles south, is an excellent choice. The largest wilderness park in New Jersey, it encompasses over 122,000 acres of land, and has varied biomes for hikers and outdoors lovers to explore. Hike, bike, fish, climb, and more. There are hundreds of miles of trails, the longest of which is the Batona Trail. Around 50 miles, it connects Wharton to the nearby Bass River and Brendan T. Byrne state forests. Apple Pie Hill, which is adjacent to the Batona Trail, is a popular stopping point. At top of the hill is a 60-foot fire tower, which is open to the public. It offers a panoramic, sweeping view of the Pinelands region.

RV Parks

In your quest to book an RV in Edison, don’t forget to search for places to park overnight while you grab some sleep. In northern New Jersey, campgrounds are few and far in between. In a pinch, one of the nearby Walmarts may allow an overnight stay. However, this close to the city, the store managers may balk.

To find overnight accommodations for your RV rental, you may need to head out of town. The Pine Cone Resort in Freehold offers full hookups and restroom and shower facilities. WiFi is free, which is a plus nowadays.

Alternatively, Timberland Lake Campground in Jackson is conveniently close to the Six Flags Great Adventure. In addition to full hookups and the usual basic amenities, there is an Olympic-sized swimming pool and a private fishing pond. Due to its proximity to the amusement park, space can go quickly, particularly on the weekends during the summer months. Book well in advance.

Exploring the City

When you rent an RV in Edison, you gain flexibility in choosing your adventure, whether it’s heading into the dazzling, high-octane New York City or kicking back in a quiet suburban town.

Dive into history and learn about esteemed Thomas Alva Edison at the Thomas Edison Center, who held over a thousand patents for his inventions. The exhibitions have several artifacts and original inventions on display. Visitors can listen to a 100-plus-years-old phonograph play audio recordings. How does it compare to a modern-day MP3 player? Some displays are interactive, and visitors are encouraged to touch and use the items.

Learn about ancient and modern art at the Zimmerli Art Museum located at Rutgers University in New Brunswick. The Zimmerli is one of the largest university-based museums in the USA. The museum houses thousands of world-class artworks, highlighting women artists from around the world. The curators and art experts regularly hold public workshops and events throughout the year; events range from drawing classes to concerts.

Unwind by hitting a few balls at the Raritan Landing Golf Course in Piscataway. Open to the public, this challenging par-58 course 18-hole course was designed by Stephen Kay. Due to space constraints, the fairway is narrower than average, and the greens are likewise smaller. This course requires some control over your swing. The facility has ADA-compliant golf carts available upon request.
