The city was founded in the late 1700s by a ferry captain named James Piggott, who built the settlement around the ferry crossing. East Saint Louis has been an integral industrial hub in Missouri and Illinois, and despite economic problems during the Great Depression, the city has continued to flourish near one of the biggest cities in Missouri and offers some of the best attractions around.
East Saint Louis has some beautiful parks, and one of the best is Citygarden Sculpture Park. This small but busy park covers roughly three acres in the heart of Saint Louis and has many unique and wondrous features rarely seen in other parks. These features include 24 sculptures, a 180-foot-long pool, and a six-foot waterfall. There's also fun for kids in the form of a "spray plaza" with water jetting up from the ground.
