Eagle Grove sits smack dab in the middle of north-central Iowa, about a 90-minute drive from the city of Des Moines and two and half hours’ drive from Cedar Rapids - the state’s largest cities. Eagle Grove is a solid half hour’s drive from Interstate 35, the north-south transportation corridor running through Iowa, which keeps the traffic down and makes for a more tranquil atmosphere.

Eagle Grove was founded in the late 1800s, near the banks of the Boone River. Since the street grid was laid down prior to the invention of the automobile, it still has the classic charm that’s often missing from cities in the western part of the country. The downtown area is highly walkable and can be properly explored in about an hour. Should you need a little more excitement, the larger community of Dodge City is just a short drive away.

The Great Outdoors

Central Iowa isn’t exactly known for its forests. Fortunately, a motorhome rental in Eagle Grove has the advantage of being very close to the Boone River. While it’s not a particularly large waterway, it does have some excellent fishing holes, and swimming in its slow-moving waters is a favorite pastime for many residents during the summer months.

However, if you’re willing to take a day trip with your camper rental from Eagle Grove, there’s also Brushy Creek State Recreation Area. It’s centered on Brushy Creek and a large pond. There are several excellent hiking trails traversing the wilderness and a campground if you’re still looking for a place to stay.

There’s also Effigy Mounds National Monument on the Mississippi River, which is a truly unique landscape filled with massive mound structures left over from the Native American inhabitants who occupied this land over 1,000 years ago. To learn more about them, join one of the ranger-led hikes put on by the park service. There’s still a lot of mystery surrounding this culture, but they can at least tell you what archeologists currently believe they were used for.

RV Parks

Finding a good place to camp when you rent an RV in Eagle Grove is fairly easy, though you may need to take a short drive to find them; many of them are located near Fort Dodge. One of the closest campgrounds is Kennedy Park Campgrounds on Fort Dodge’s northern edge. It overlooks Badger Lake and is part of the much larger Kennedy Park complex, which has several trails and is adjacent to a golf course. Sites have electrical hookups for your RV rental along with picnic tables and fire rings.

You can also head west on Highway 3 to the town of Dakota City. Their municipal park has a campground that includes electrical hookups and hot showers. It’s conveniently located just outside of town, so it has easy access to urban amenities like grocery stores, restaurants, and gas stations. The park sits on the bank of the East Fork of the Des Moines River too, so you won’t need to go far for great fishing opportunities.

If you’re searching for a Walmart parking lot to camp in when you book an RV in Eagle Grove, there are stores in Fort Dodge and Iowa Falls. You’ll need to ask for the manager’s permission before you set up camp there, but it could be an option if you’re only camping for a couple of nights.

Exploring the City

If you’re hunting for good restaurants and shopping, you’ll need to widen your search area to include places like Dodge City and Algona, as the pickings are slim in Eagle Grove. Getting an RV rental in Eagle Grove is a great way to experience small-town living, but you may need to take a few trips to enjoy big-city vibes.

Think Iowa is all about corn farming? Well, it’s not, but if that’s something you’re interested in, check out the Heartland Museum in Clayton. It’s home to the largest farm tractor in the world, Big Bud. It’s about twice the size of the next largest tractor, and the museum is a fascinating place to tour if you’re into antique farm equipment. There are also teddy bear and model train exhibits along with an old-fashioned soda shop to add a little variety to the experience.

To explore Iowa’s pioneer history when getting a travel trailer rental in Eagle Grove, stop by the Quasdorf Blacksmith and Wagon Museum in Dows. While many are familiar with the Oregon and Mormon Trail, it’s often forgotten that the wagon trains started in the Midwest near Iowa. Before the railways got into action in the middle of the 19th century, Iowa was part of the busiest transportation corridor in the West. Today many of those rail lines cross near Eagle Grove, but the Quasdorf Museum is chock-full of hand-powered tools, wagon wheels, and iron latches that will make you forget such modern forms of transportation.
