Durant sits on the western edge of what’s referred to as the Quad Cities region of Iowa/Illinois which is made up of the cities of Davenport, Moline, Rock Island, and Bettendorf. Those cities make up the largest metropolitan area between Minneapolis and St. Louis and the Quad Cities region is one of the most densely populated areas on the Upper Mississippi River. For much of its history, the region has been known for its manufacturing plants, with big names like John Deere and Honeywell making their home there.

Durant is somewhat removed from the hustle and bustle of the city though, situated amongst the vast corn and soybean fields that dominate the landscape as you travel farther west through the state. It’s a great place to base your RV adventure, as traffic will be sparse and the RV parks plentiful; perfect for a low-key and stress-free vacation.

Discover Durant

The Great Outdoors

Iowa is sometimes underestimated when it comes to outdoor adventure, but thankfully, when you choose an RV rental in Durant, you’ll have easy access to tons of great state parks and wilderness areas along the Mississippi River. For a brief nature walk or a picnic with the family, head over to Credit Island just outside of Davenport. It’s mostly undeveloped and sees a lot of waterfowl traffic, perfect for bird watching.

West Lake Park is a bit closer to Durant and has several hiking trails surrounding the crescent-shaped Railroad Lake. The lake has some good fishing, and they allow boats with electric motors to slowly ply the waters. There’s also a disc golf course that’s considered to be one of the more difficult ones in the Quad City region.

Wildcat Den State Park is a bit farther downriver and is a particularly good spot to take the kids hiking. The Punch Bowl region of the park has several bridges that cross over Pine Creek, which the little ones love to play on. The historic Pine Creek Grist Mill sits on the southeastern edge of the park and is a favorite amongst landscape photographers.

RV Parks

As Durant is on the outskirts of a major metropolitan area, there are quite a few campgrounds to choose from when you rent an RV there. Most of them are located just west of Moline and Davenport, so you should have access to plenty of urban amenities when you stay in one of them.

One of the closest parks to Durant is Interstate RV Park, which is just off the I-80/I-280 interchange. Their sites come with electrical hookups and visitors have access to bathrooms, showers, a dump station, laundry facilities, and a dog walking area. They also have special offers for active military personnel. This could be a good place to stay if you want to be close to the highway for easy day trips to the surrounding area.

You also might consider Lakeside RV Park, which is only a short distance away when you choose an RV rental in Durant. It’s right outside of Davenport and has easy access to all the recreational opportunities on the Mississippi River while also being near to West Lake Park. There are more long-term residents at this park, but short-termers are welcome, and they have full hookups for your camper rental from Durant.

An option that will appeal to those wishing to explore areas farther from the city is Bald Eagle Campground, about a half hour’s drive to the northwest on Highway 61. It’s right on the edge of Scott County Park, which contains an 18-hole course if you’re thinking about hitting the links when you get a travel trailer rental in Durant. Sites have full hookups too, along with access to showers and a dump station.

Exploring the City

When you book an RV in Durant, you can expect a very low-key experience; there aren’t many restaurants or shops lining its main street to keep you entertained. However, it does have a very central and convenient location for exploring the rest of eastern Iowa and the western edge of Illinois. All along the Mississippi riverfront in the Quad Cities, you’ll find fantastic restaurants, breweries, pubs, and souvenir shops. If you’re looking for a night out when you get an RV rental in Durant, IA, this is definitely the place to go.

However, if you feel like taking a deep dive into a fashion mainstay, go wander the halls of the Pearl Button Museum in Muscatine and see how it became the “Pearl Button Capital of the World” in the early 1900s. It’s a fascinating story told through a series of galleries and films about how Muscatine came to produce about the third of the buttons being sold worldwide.

If you’re bringing the kids along when you get a motorhome rental in Durant, plan for a day out at Modern Woodmen Park in Davenport. The park has a Ferris wheel and some games, but perhaps more importantly, it’s a great place to watch a minor league baseball game.
