Founded in 1858 as the county seat of Sequatchie County, Dunlap is a small city that was named for the state legislator William Claiborne Dunlap. It flourished with the discovery of coal around the turn of the 20th century, with the coal converted into coke at nearby Fredonia Mountain, a site that is now protected within the Dunlap Coke Ovens Park.

Dunlap’s proximity to spectacular natural wilderness areas makes it a popular place to rent an RV while exploring southeastern Tennessee. It’s well-served by RV campgrounds while being just a stone’s throw from the cultural museums and family-friendly attractions of Chattanooga.

Discover Dunlap

The Great Outdoors

Pick up your motorhome rental in Dunlap and drive south to the Prentice Cooper State Forest, which sprawls across more than 24,000 acres along the scenic Tennessee River Gorge. There are around 35 miles of hiking trails to explore, as well as mountain biking, horseback riding, and rock climbing pursuits. Follow the Mullens Cove Loop for breathtaking views of the Tennessee River Gorge or tackle the famous rock climbing crag - the Tennessee Wall.

A short drive west of Dunlap is the Savage Gulf State Natural Area, a 15,590-acre scenic wilderness of dramatic sandstone cliffs and waterfalls. Witness the iconic Stone Door - a deep crack that stretches from the top of the escarpment to the gorge below - or trek to the Greeter Falls that drop into a crystal clear plunge pool. If you’re visiting during the spring months, head to Collins Gulf that’s renowned for its magnificent displays of wildflowers.

A 30-minute drive north of Dunlap is the Fall Creek Falls State Park, which is centered around the upper Cane Creek Gorge and the 256-foot Fall Creek Falls. Aside from this photogenic cascade (which is the highest free-fall waterfall east of the Mississippi River), there are numerous other falls that can be explored along the park’s hiking trails. Admire the 125-foot Rockhouse Falls or soak up the breathtaking views from the Cane Creek Gorge Overlook and Buzzard’s Roost.

If you’re willing to travel farther, head east to the Bluewater Resort and RV Campground in Dayton, which overlooks the waters of Richland Creek. There are full hookups with 30 or 50 amp service, as well as a swimming pool, a laundry room, and a private boat ramp for fishing on Chickamauga Lake.

Exploring the City
