If you would rather stay dry, cruise over to Nelson Park, a gorgeous green space that lies on the lake’s shoreline. Spitler Woods State Park is a little further out of town and provides some respite from the busy urban parks closer to the center. Exploring the City

Decatur has been extremely lucky in recent years to receive a huge grant to regenerate the town. Downtown Decatur in particular, has recently undergone a $14 million redevelopment project, and there are even more plans to invest money into this up and coming city in the future. With this, the city is now at the top of its game, with plenty to offer visitors!

The intrigue in Decatur is the juxtaposition of the old and the new within the city center. The old can be seen in its architecture; the triumphs of the 1850’s that still stand today. The new is evident in the Decatur Mural Project that has crept through the city. This project was established in 2012 with the help of local volunteers, with the vision to inspire creativity and progression amongst the residents. It is worth spending time to have a walk around town, keeping an eye out for these unique pieces.

Scovill Zoo, situated on the banks of Lake Decatur is a must see if you need to entertain any little ones. Starting out as a small farm project in 1967, the zoo has now grown to over 500 animals and 96 different species. The well-designed shelters and informative displays will keep the whole family entertained!

In the evening, why not treat yourself to a delicious dinner at one of the many restaurants in town. Chinese, Indian, Italian or just good old American grub can be found along Decatur’s high street. For an after-dinner tipple, stop off at one of the many breweries that have recently been cropping up!
