The small town of De Leon is located in central Florida, a short drive west of Daytona Beach. The town is named for Juan Ponce de León, a Spanish explorer who is one of the first European conquistadors to map out Florida. It is said that Juan Ponce de León spent a great deal of his life in search of the fabled “Fountain of Youth”, which he believed to be in Florida. The town and nearby De Leon Springs State Park are both named for the explorer due to the natural springs that could have once been mistaken for the mythic fountain.
De Leon Springs is absolutely tiny, with a few thousand citizens living in the town. Aside from its lovely lush scenery, De Leon Springs is known for its natural springs and its historical buildings. When you search for an RV in De Leon Springs, you can head to the Atlantic Coast with ease to see some of the country’s best beaches or you can drive to Miami or nearby Orlando to make the most of your camper rental near De Leon Springs.
Florida is blessed with a lot of nature preserves, state parks, spectacular beaches, and popular national parks, so no matter where you rent an RV in the state, you are bound to stumble upon some excellent outdoor areas. De Leon Springs State Park is a natural place to start your trip, found on the outskirts of town adjacent to Spring Garden Lake. The park is built around a natural spring that churns out more than twenty million gallons of water each day from deep underground. The park is home to lots of fascinating archaeological sites, including two canoes dating back over 5,000 years ago making them the oldest canoes found in the Western Hemisphere. You can hike through the park and see some stunning wildlife like sleepy alligators, manatees seeking warmer waters in wintertime, and soaring bald eagles. Canoeing, kayaking, and fishing can be enjoyed in the main spring run and guests may even swim in the smaller spring pool. Bulow Creek State Park is farther away by the coast and full of southern live oaks, some of which are among the oldest in existence. You cannot camp at the park in your De Leon Springs RV rental, but primitive camping, hiking, canoeing, and picnicking are acceptable ways to utilize the coastal park.
Ocala National Forest is an amazing place in central Florida, with several conservation areas and recreational areas in addition to wide swaths of wilderness. The forest has nearly half a million acres of pine forests, shrublands, and burnt out desert as a result of frequent natural wildfires. There are over 600 ponds and lakes in the park, more than enough to find your own private watering hole when you bring your De Leon Springs motorhome rental to the epic forest. There are several wonderful campgrounds to park at with your De Leon Springs RV rental too in case you feel like spending a few extra days in the forest.
Canaveral National Seashore has over 24 miles of pristine beach undeveloped and undisturbed by humans. Countless migratory birds call the seashore their temporary home while they rest to recharge after flying thousands of miles. You can spend days on the beach staring off into the Atlantic Ocean, soaking up the sun's warming rays and listening to the glistening waves charge forth and retreat endlessly. On clear days, you might even witness a space shuttle launching off into space at the Kennedy Space Center located on Cape Canaveral.
Of all the states in the country, Florida might just be the best for RV camping due to the sheer number of parks and campgrounds located in the state. In Ocala National Forest, there are plenty of places to camp with your De Leon camper rental, with incredible views and a peaceful atmosphere. Deland/St. Johns River KOA is a place to camp out to the south of town, with its own snack bar, pavilion, and fishing pond.
Riviera Resort & Marina is another option, with boat rentals, waterfront campsites, and a pool to swim in too. Daytona Speedway RV Park is your best bet if you feel like heading to Daytona Beach and catching the world-famous Daytona 500 NASCAR race held each year in February at the Daytona International Speedway just minutes from the RV park.
De Leon Springs has very few attractions to call its own, but there are some interesting places to check out in the surrounding towns and areas. Before you head off to see them, you can visit the Strawn Historic Citrus Packing House District which contains 12 historic buildings and three additional structures. The abandoned packing house and factory are the last remnants of the facility that was started in 1882.
Reptile Discovery Center is an interesting spot to bring your family, with a massive menagerie of different reptiles. There are venomous snakes housed at the center, where staff members extract venom each day in a live demonstration to make anti-venom for snake bites. The Athens Theater is a revitalized Italian Renaissance style building that first opened its doors to the public in 1922. The theater still puts on performances, concerts, and other live events to this day. The Museum of Art-DeLand is a fine institution that seeks to preserve and pay homage to local art while fostering an appreciation for the visual arts for younger generations. There are nine different galleries often holding ever-changing collections and exhibitions to keep patrons on their toes.
