Davenport is a city in and the county seat of Scott County, Iowa; it was established in 1836 and named after a former English sailor, George Davenport, who fought for the U.S. Army in the War of 1812. Davenport is located on the Mississippi River and on the Iowa-Illinois border and is approximately halfway between Chicago and Des Moines. The city is home to Palmer College of Chiropractic where the practice was first begun and to a Class A minor-league baseball team, the Quad Cities River Bandits. It has been recognized several times for its livability, affordability, and concentration of high-tech jobs. The city hosts several music festivals each year, such as the Mississippi Valley Blues Festival, the Mississippi Valley Fair, and the Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Festival. The Bix Beiderbecke Festival includes an internationally known foot race, the Bix 7, as part of its celebration.

The Great Outdoors

Scott County Park is an urban park area where guests can go hiking or horseback riding on the park's numerous trails, camping in one of the many unique campgrounds, or enjoy the heated swimming pool. It has a playground and baseball field and is a popular destination for picnics with shelters equipped with tables and grills.

Port Louisa National Wildlife Refuge was established as a protected area for migrating birds along the Mississippi River Flyway, but it also strives to protect the fish and wildlife in the region and the habitats they reside in. It is comprised of grasslands and floodplain forest with oak, pecan, and other tree types. Hunting and fishing are allowed within the park; other permitted activities include kayaking, wildlife viewing, and photography. Visitors have reported seeing more than 200 bird species in the park, some resident and some migratory, including bald eagles. Keep your Davenport camper rental nearby, and you can use it as a blind while enjoying its creature comforts.

Saulsbury Bridge Recreation Area is divided into two parts, one for wildlife habitat and hunting, and the second for other recreational activities. It is divided by the Cedar River which has two bridges spanning it (other previous spans were burnt down); visitors can fish from the spans, which are open to foot traffic but not vehicles. The park has a volleyball court, horseshoe pits, and playgrounds. Visitors can rent canoes or kayaks to take out on the river or hike the many trails that criss-cross the park. Picnicking and camping are also popular activities here.
