Mainly known for a geological curiosity, a large sulfur dome, Damon’s Mound was named after the first settler, Samuel Damon. Samuel arrived in the area in the early 1830s and built a home on the south side of the mound. A small settlement slowly grew, and the town was bolstered by the arrival of a railroad who laid down tracks through the town. Eventually, the usage of “mound” was dropped from the town name.

Samual Damon was not, by any means, the first human to reside in the area. The Karankawa, a Native American tribe, are known to have resided in the area. Several artifacts, burial grounds, arrowheads, stone tools, and pottery shards have been found at the mound. Steve Austin, who is often referred to as the Father of Texas, organized volunteers to drive the Karankawa from the Texas coastal region in the early 1820s. The colonists repeatedly attacked the tribe, and it is believed that as of 1891, they were extinct.

Although the dome is still intact, it’s not easily visible today. Sometimes in the late 1980s, Texas started a “beautification” project and planted many trees and re-introduced native plants. Today, especially in springs and summers, the lush green trees and landscape obscure the mound.

The Great Outdoor

Although there are hundreds of small lakes and ponds in the area, most of them are on private ranchland. Err on the side of caution and visit a state park in a Damon travel trailer rental. The Brazos Bend State Park is a modest 5,000-acre park with nearly 40 miles of multi-use trails. This park is pet-friendly; however, due to venomous snakes and a robust alligator population, dogs are required to be on a six-foot leash. Nature lovers, birders, and photographers will appreciate the abundant wildlife who thrive in this park. A short list of species who make their home in Brazos Bend includes feral pigs, river otters, bobcats, deer, and American Alligator. Note: all horses must have paperwork proving they have had negative Coggins results. Bring your Damon RV rental! Parking is plentiful.

Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge and its cousin parks, Justin Hurst Wildlife Management Area and San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge, are home to an impressive variety of birds and wildlife. The three parks have a unique mix of terrains that draw wildlife typically seen in distinct ecosystems. For example, outdoorsmen might see pelicans, a sea bird, and great horned owls, typically only seen in deep forests, far inland. All combined, there are nearly 100 miles of trails for hiking and biking. Fishing and crabbing are allowed in many of the small lakes just past the first ridge of sand dunes. However, a couple of lakes have crabbing restrictions. Check online for the regulations. Although these parks don’t have campgrounds, many parking lots can accommodate a large rig like a motorhome rental from Damon.

RV Parks

Roughly 50 miles from Houston, and 40 to Freeport, Damon is a great spot to search for an RV rental. Don’t forget to figure out where to park overnight, too. There are a few options within 10 miles of Damon. Herrera’s RV Park in Needville, offers full hookups, roomy lots on manicured green lawns, and wide open space.

Plantation Oaks Resort in West Columbia, is a luxury type campground, with a gated entryway, WiFi, a catch n’ release pond, and roomy lots to accommodate a motorhome rental from Damon with slideouts.

The Brazos Bend State Park’s campground may be a good option if you seek a more rustic setting. The campground has a few lots with electric hookups, and hot showers and restroom facilities are available, as well.

Exploring the City

A small town of about 500 people, it’s the sort of place where everyone knows everyone. The locals are welcoming of visitors. To get the latest gossip on where to find the best fishing spots in a Damon camper rental, stop at the West of Brazos, a local pub with a small pool hall. Even in a rural area, there’s plenty of places to see and adventure to be found. Open your horizons by gazing into the vast space, and marvel at the mysterious faraway galaxies and nebulas. The George Observatory in the nearby Brazoria Bend park is open to the public on Saturdays, weather permitting.

What’s wilder than jumping off a plane? The Skydive Spaceland in Rosharon is a family business. For the first-timers, a tandem jump is the only choice. Spaceland also offers lessons, and customers can get their A license in as little as a week, provided that they put in the time. Spaceland is also home to professional and amateur skydiving teams. Spectators are welcome to watch the practice jumps from the observation deck.

Step back into time and learn what it was like to run a ranch back in the Old West times. Pecan orchards and magnolia trees draped with trailing Spanish moss line the grounds. As old as Texas is, the Varner-Hogg Historic Plantation give the visitors a glimpse into the past. The tour guides blend the local folklore about the bygone cowboys, Indians, and Mexican with documented history about the plantation.

At the end of a long day of adventure and fun, retreat from the mosquitoes into a Damon RV rental and kick up your heels. Find your fun in Texas!
