Established as recently as 1964, Crofton, Maryland is a newly-built residential town that’s anchored around a golf course. It was named after a small township in England’s Cumberland County and although initially a gated community, it’s now open to all.

Crofton has consistently been ranked as one of the “100 Best Places to Live” in the United States and is just as popular with RV enthusiasts. Its leafy streets and proximity to recreational reserves and the big cities of Baltimore and Washington, D.C. make it the ideal place to rent an RV and explore.

Discover Crofton

The Great Outdoors

Pick up your RV rental in Crofton and make the short drive west to the Patuxent Research Refuge, a sprawling protected area that supports vital wildlife research in the United States. Begin your visit at the National Wildlife Visitor Center whose interactive exhibits offer a unique look at global issues affecting wildlife and natural habitats, then stretch your legs along one of the hiking trails through the surrounding woodlands. The refuge is home to white-tailed deer and beavers, as well as a myriad of bird species that include great blue herons and migratory neotropical birds.

Whitemarsh Park in nearby Bowie is just five minutes’ drive from Crofton and home to a variety of recreational facilities that will keep young and old entertained. Make use of the ballfields and picnic pavilions or explore the nature trail on foot or by bicycle. Whitemarsh Park is also home to the Bowie Playhouse where theatrical shows and musicals are regularly presented.

You can also pick up your travel trailer rental in Crofton and drive east to spend the day relaxing in Annapolis’ Waterworks Park - a 500-acre green space near the Annapolis Mall. It’s situated overlooking a lake and has three freshwater fishing ponds that allow catch and release fishing. There are also miles of nature trails to explore and picnic pavilions where you can have lunch or just soak up the contemplative atmosphere.

RV Parks

Book a camper rental in Crofton and pull into one of the full hookup sites at the Washington DC/Capitol KOA. There’s an outdoor pool and basketball court for campers to use, as well as a jumping pillow, and you can take advantage of the daily shuttles going into Washington, D.C.

Military members can book a site at the Camp Meade RV Park in nearby Fort Meade, with RV sites offering full hookups. If you’re traveling with kids, they can let loose in the playground, at the games room, or on the ball fields, and there’s a laundry facility conveniently located on site.

A little farther out of the town is another family-friendly RV destination - Cherry Hill Park in College Park. Pets are welcome at their back-in and pull-through full hookup sites, with two outdoor pools, a hot tub, splash park, children’s playground, and mini-golf course to keep the whole family entertained.

In Severn, there's a Walmart where you may be able to set up for a night or two with the manager’s permission.

Exploring the City

Park your RV rental near Crofton and explore the town on foot, stopping to admire the historic residence of White’s Hall where local philanthropist and entrepreneur Johns Hopkins was born. Another architectural landmark is Linthicum Walks, which was built by Thomas Linthicum III over 200 years ago and once formed part of a tobacco farm. It also hosted George Washington on his travels between Annapolis and Philadelphia and is today listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

If you want to learn more about the region’s history, follow the Baltimore and Annapolis Trail that extends from Boulters Way in Arnold to the Baltimore Light Rail’s Cromwell Station in Glen Burnie. Interpretive signs detail the people and events that are linked to the Baltimore & Annapolis Railroad’s history and how it impacted the local communities. Aside from taking you through scenic rural countryside and quaint settlements, the trail is marked by old switch boxes and railroad tracks.

Crofton is within easy reach of Baltimore and Washington, D.C., which are both around 30 minutes’ drive away. Spend a day exploring the outstanding museums and art galleries of Baltimore, then visit the National Aquarium and entertainment facilities of Inner Harbor. Or, head southwest to visit the national sites of Washington, D.C., including the Lincoln Memorial, the National Mall, and the White House.

Crofton is home to a shopping mall where you can pick up your grocery supplies and more, as well as a gas station if you want to fill up your Crofton motorhome rental. There are also a handful of fast food restaurants and eateries for dining out, or you can drive north to Odenton where there’s a more extensive selection.

Whether you’re visiting Anne Arundel County for its railway legacy or family-friendly parks, book an RV in Crofton and begin your next adventure.
