“Real Fun, Real Colorado” is the motto of Cripple Creek, a charming town in the Colorado Rockies. Cripple Creek unsurprisingly began as a mining camp, like much of its neighboring towns, back in 1890. The Gold Rush of Cripple Creek started much later than the rest of the state and was one of the last places to become a booming mining town high up in the mountains. At nearly 10,000 feet in altitude, Cripple Creek doesn’t appear to be a mountain town because it is situated in an alpine valley.

You won’t find much gold or many precious metals in Cripple Creek these days, as the mining has been mostly idle for 100 years. Several fires wreaked havoc on the small town at the turn of the century so many of the historic structures date back to 1896, the year of the fire. After the mines ran dry, a town-wide diaspora occurred and the population dwindled to only a handful of people. Cripple Creek essentially existed as a ghost town for much of the 20th century, until its recent revival and metamorphosis into a gambling and tourism-oriented destination. With elegant old buildings, historic significance, incredible natural beauty, and an artsy, cultured feel, you can book an RV in Cripple Creek and experience the truest form of Colorado.

Explore the Outdoors

Plotting out your destinations when you plan your Cripple Creek RV rental vacation can be a challenge, especially with all the stunning places to choose from. Colorado is jam-packed with exceptional outdoor destinations so the good news is that anywhere you choose should be pretty incredible. Mueller State Park is north of town and just a short drive away with your Cripple Creek motorhome rental. The park is close to Colorado Springs and is a popular recreation destination. The 5,000-acre park has an astounding 55 miles of trails you can hike or horseback ride on. Hunting, fishing, mountain biking, rock climbing, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing are great ways to enjoy the park, and the campground is an excellent choice if you feel like staying overnight in your Cripple Creek camper rental.

Cheyenne Mountain State Park is another wonderful addition to the Colorado State Park System, with lots of amazing wildlife like black bears, coyotes, cougars, elk, foxes, golden eagles, and more. The park is much smaller than Mueller State Park but has some sublime views of the towering Rocky Mountains that hover above Colorado Springs. You can camp out at Cheyenne Mountain in your Cripple Creek camper rental too, and visit the Interpretive Center at the park to learn about the natural history and wildlife of the park.

Lake Pueblo State Park is located in the Front Range by the city of Pueblo, and away from the mountains. This lovely park has 60 miles of pristine shoreline lining the Pueblo Reservoir which was created by damming the Arkansas River. Two marinas service the lake making it an ideal place to cruise around the lake on a boat, looking for great fishing spots or places to take a quick swim. Fortunately, there are several campgrounds at the park so you have the opportunity to camp out by the lake when you rent an RV in Cripple Creek and head to Lake Pueblo State Park.

There are so many impressive national parks to see in Colorado but there might not be enough time to see them all. Great Sand Dunes National Park is the closest national park to Cripple Creek and perhaps your best chance to see one of the most gorgeous places in the state. The park is unique as it features massive sand dunes near the mountains, seemingly out of place in the Colorado terrain. When you bring your Cripple Creek camper rental to the sand dunes, there are campgrounds that can accommodate you while you stay. Additionally, you can hike around the park and over the lofty dunes or even sand board down them for a bizarre and memorable experience.

RV Parks to Visit

Finding a place to camp overnight when you rent an RV in Cripple Creek shouldn’t be too challenging, as RV camping is quite popular in the area. Eagles Landing RV Park is right in the heart of Cripple Creek, just a few minutes’ walk from many of the town’s casinos and restaurants. Lost Burro Campground is a smaller park with a few camping spots just outside of town. It might be small, but it has some breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.

Cripple Creek KOA has a bunch of pull-through camping sites for large campers and RVs, a pavilion, a dog park, and more when you choose to stay at the high-altitude campground. Don’t forget that Mueller State Park, Eleven Mile State Park, Lake Pueblo State Park, and even Pike National Forest are all welcoming of RV campers too.

City Sightseeing

Cripple Creek has long been touted as one Colorado’s most treasured towns, known for its beautiful, old buildings and fascinating history. In fact, the entire Cripple Creek Historic District was granted National Historic Landmark status in 1961, designating the entire downtown area as a certified piece of history. Most people come to town to visit one of the many casinos, as gambling has become the de facto industry in town. If you don’t partake in gambling, there are some other activities that should keep you occupied and happy too.

The Outlaw and Lawmen Jail Museum is an extraordinary institution that was a prison up until 1991. Since then, it has become a museum featuring all sorts of information on the lawmen that kept Cripple Creek safe and the infamous prisoners that defied them. The Butte Theater was an old opera house built in the 1890s that has since been refurbished as a modern theater for movies, stage productions, and musical performances.

The Cripple Creek & Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad is an awesome experience for people of all ages, and especially children, that takes passengers through the wilderness of the Rocky Mountains on a historic train that once serviced the entire county. The ride takes you through high mountains passes, through thick, evergreen forests, and past lots of abandoned ghost towns and old mining settlements.
