Serving as the seat of Adams County, Council is a small city on the edge of the Payette National Forest. It was first settled by George and Elizabeth Moser in 1876, with their homestead later evolving into the town of Council where the first post office was established in 1878.

Today, Council is renowned for its World Champion Porcupine Race that takes place every Independence Day, as well as the Council Mountain Music Festival each August. Its proximity to the forested mountains and riverside trails of western Idaho make it a great place to rent an RV, all just two hours’ drive from Nampa and Boise.

Discover Council

The Great Outdoors

Pick up your RV rental in Council and head to the West Mountains to trek to the peak of Council Mountain, which can be approached from a number of different directions. After hiking through a thick forest, the views open out towards the north face of Granite Basin Peak and the so-called “Seven Devils.” Alternatively, you can opt to explore the 4.5-mile-long trail that leads to the Council Mountain Hot Springs, with dogs also welcome to join you if they’re on a leash.

Or, head west to tackle the trail that leads to Sturgill Peak, a 7,589-foot mountain that is the highest point of the Hitt Mountain Range. An 8.5-mile-long trail leads from Tool Cache Saddle to the spectacular summit, which affords magnificent views across the Wallowa Range in Oregon. Also nearby is Cuddy Mountain, a 7,867-foot peak that offers equally superb views from its summit, which is the highest point in Washington County.

To the northeast of Council sprawls the Payette National Forest, which encompasses more than two million acres that border the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area, the Boise National Forest, and the Salmon-Challis National Forest. It’s a hub for outdoor adventures, with everything from hiking and fishing to skiing and snowmobiling on offer throughout the year. While exploring the trails, keep an eye out for the more than 300 species of wildlife that call the forest, its low-elevation canyons, and dramatic peaks “home.”

RV Parks

Pick up your camper rental in Council and book into one of the sites of the Weiser River Trail RV Park, which offers direct access to the 85-mile-long Weiser River Trail. This full-service RV park includes a laundry facility where you can catch up on your washing, as well as covered RV storage space.

Or, drive south to the Frontier Motel & RV Park in Cambridge. It offers a small selection of full hookup RV sites, picnic tables, and a laundry facility, as well as access to the motel’s swimming pool.

It’s just over an hour’s drive south to Ontario in neighboring Oregon, where there's a Walmart where you may be able to set up for a night or two with the manager’s permission.

Exploring the City

Park your RV rental near Council and stroll through the town, stopping at the Old Railroads Historical Marker to learn about the railway history of the region. There are two vintage railroad vehicles on display, as well as a grassy lawn where children can roam free.

Running north-to-south along the western edge of Council is the Weiser River Trail, which follows the path of the old railway lines that extended from Weiser to New Meadows. This 84-mile-long trail lies parallel to the scenic Weiser River and provides a setting for recreational pursuits throughout the year, including hiking, cycling, and horseback riding. Pass through landscapes of desert sagebrush and alpine forest teeming with wildflowers, with the trail connecting to the small communities of Midvale and Cambridge.

If you’re visiting during the winter months, head north to the Brundage Mountain Idaho Ski Resort, an alpine ski area in the Payette National Forest. It’s a renowned destination for backcountry powder skiing, with some of the highest average snowfalls in Idaho. Aside from utilizing the cable cars that access the mountain, you can embark on multi-day trips to explore the snow-blanketed landscapes of Granite Mountain and Slab Mountain. During the summer months, Brundage Mountain transforms into a mountain biking wonderland, with chairlifts serving more than 20 miles of specially built single-track trails.

Council has a supermarket where you can pick up grocery supplies, as well as a couple of eateries if you want to dine out. There’s also a gas station if you want to fill up your campervan rental in Council.

Whether you’re visiting Adams County for its ski resorts or mountain hiking trails, book an RV in Council and start exploring.
