In 1856, a group of settlers from Ohio were desperate to find a new home on the proposed railroad. Eventually, they settled on a spot just north of where the Loup and Platte Rivers merge. This is the area that we now know as Columbus, named after the capital of the settler's home state.

Although this may look like your ordinary railroad town, when you secure yourself an RV rental in Columbus, you can delve a little deeper to discover the hidden gems. Book an RV rental in Platte County today to uncover the rich cultural heritage that lies in the people and places of Columbus!

The Great Outdoors

With eighteen parks, three rivers and eight lakes in the vicinity, renting a motorhome in Columbus to exploring the great outdoors could not be easier. Covering over 155 acres, Pawnee Park is one of the largest outdoor spaces in Columbus. Home to a number of small ponds, this is a great place for anyone who loves a gentle day of fishing in a tranquil setting. For families with young children, there are several playgrounds and plenty of wild geese and ducks to observe. Whilst in the park, why not check out the Higgins Memorial statue. This impressive monument is dedicated to Andrew Jackson Higgins, a famous inventor that was born in Columbus.

With such an abundance of lakes in the area, it is an ideal place to take a boat and get out on the water. Lake Babcock and Lake North are both found just a ten-minute drive north of Columbus and boast ample opportunities for boating, fishing and, swimming. Known for its healthy population of huge carp, Lake Babcock can get very crowded with fishermen, so get there early to guarantee the most prosperous spot!

If you would rather view the calm waters from a distance, there are plenty of trails that wind around the county, showcasing its best bits. A popular paved hiking path is the 2.4-mile long, Two Lakes Trail. Following the northern shore of Lake Babcock, it eventually crosses the historic Loup Canal. From here it is possible to join the scenic Bob Lake Trail, which will take walkers along the southern shores of the lake. Many nature enthusiasts choose these trails for a chance to see the vibrant Nebraskan wildflowers and the giant American Water Lotus!

RV Parks

Most of the parks and lakes around the area have campgrounds where you can stay in your Columbus camper rental. Better still, many are free and come with electrical hook-ups! Consider staying in Loup Park if you want to be as close to town as possible. Found on the shores of Lake Babcock, this campground offers travelers a secluded spot with the convenience of the city nearby. As well as restrooms, fire pits, BBQ facilities and, a kids playing area, a small number of the sites have electric hook-ups.

If Loup Park is full, head next door to the Lake North Campground. Offering large gravel pitches with electrical hook-ups, all for free, this campground gets incredibly busy. Arrive early to guarantee a spot within walking distance to the beautiful Lake North, an ideal spot for swimming and water sports!

Highway 81 is one of the only RV Parks in the area offering travelers full hook-ups for their Columbus motorhome rental. Although the rates are reasonable and the location convenient, there are no other communal facilities on offer here so vehicles should be self-contained.

Exploring the City

The city center has plenty to keep the whole family entertained when you choose travel trailer rental in Columbus. Whether you are a family of adults or you have lots of small children to keep busy, Pawnee Plush Water Park is for you. As one of the only water parks in Nebraska, there is nothing like it for miles. Afterward, why not continue the day of fun at the Horn T Zoo. This family-run zoo is the perfect stop for anyone who enjoys discovering new and unusual animals from all over the globe. Admission is free, and the zoo is open from June through to October. The only thing you might want to buy is some food to feed the friendly animals.

Looking for a little more culture during your trip? Take a visit to the Platte County Museum. Stretching across three different buildings, including an original Ward School built in 1912, it is easy enough to while away a good few hours here. The busy schedule of rotating exhibitions can include anything from a display of Indian stone tools to an in-depth study of Victorian clothing.
