The museum opened in 1999 in an 1890s Victorian Cottage and traces the history of the town and Potomac River from Captain John Smith's tour in 1607 to present day through the use of a range of photography and artifacts. In addition to running the museum, the Historical Society run a range of events throughout the year such as the Antique Car Show and Big Band Dance.

The calendar of Colonial Beach is packed with events all through the year, but one of the town’s favorites is the Boardwalk Arts and Crafts Fair which takes place in September. Stalls and booths line the wooden boardwalk along the beach, displaying a range of arts and crafts created by talented locals. You’ll find items in a range of media such as glass, ceramic, paintings, photography, and jewelry, so this a good place to pick up a souvenir.
