Iowa is known more for cornfields than beautiful outdoor destinations, but northern central Iowa is an exception to that rule. When you book an RV Cerro Gordo county, home of Clear Lake, you’ll be in the land of bluffs, forests, and plenty of outdoor attractions. Clear Lake is a must-see destination in this region, as it is a 3,600 acre naturally occurring lake that has an average depth of 10 feet and is fantastic for swimming, boating, and other water activities. The lake underwent a huge nine million dollar restoration project that was completed in 2009 and is fun to visit during all seasons of the year.

It is easy to see and experience the lake when you camp in an RV near Clear Lake, and aside from having the city of Clear Lake at your fingertips, you’ll also have easy access to Mason City, Forest City, Hampton, and more. This region is a nice mixture of farmland, bluffs, rivers, lakes, and forests. Whether you are renting an RV in the summer heat or winter cold, Cerro Gordo County has plenty to offer on your exciting Iowa vacation.

Getting Outdoors

Being outdoors is a popular activity in Iowa, no matter what the season or weather. In the summer, there are hikes, lakes, and more to explore, while wintertime brings ice fishing, cross country skiing, and the like. Clear Lake and the surrounding area are used for a lot of these, and during the summertime, the lake is very popular with anglers and swimmers. Be sure to pack your swimsuit and fishing gear in your rental RV, since the lake is home to over half a dozen fish.

Swimming in Clear Lake is encouraged, and there are 900 feet of sandy beaches to enter from. These beaches are unsupervised, so be aware that you’ll be swimming at your own risk. The beaches are soft sand and offer great opportunities to layout and soak up some sun, play beach volleyball or other sports, or read a book under an umbrella.

When you rent a camper near Clear Lake, you’ll also have access to the nearby parks, hiking trails, and natural sightseeing opportunities in the area. There are plenty of trails to explore in Clear Lake State Park and both the Ventura Marsh Wildlife Management Area and the McIntosh Wildlife Management Area. Geocaching is a popular activity to participate in while hiking, but be sure that you aren’t hurting plants and animals during your searches for hidden caches.

Camping at Clear Lake

There are many places located on the shores of Clear Lake where you’ll be able to go camping with an RV. The lake is home to two different state parks and three separate privately-owned campgrounds, between these five locations there are over 200 RV compatible campsites to choose from. One of the easiest options though, thanks to a high number of campsites and an easy reservation system, is RV camping at Clear Lake State Park.

This state park is home to approximately 180 campsites in total, of which over 160 can accommodate RVs. There are 161 campsites that offer standard full hookups of water and electricity, while an additional eight campsites can accommodate RVs but don’t have any electricity or water hookups. Many different amenities can be found in these various campgrounds, including hot showers, flushing toilets, small convenience stores, firewood sales, picnic shelters, grills, fire pits, and more.

Exploring the Area

The city of Clear Lake, which is named after the lake that it was built adjacent to, is one of the closest places to find fuel and food while camping near the lake. There are many diverse restaurants to choose from, including some midwestern specialty family-style restaurants in addition to the standard assortment of chain and fast food options. Additionally, many different gas stations are located in town so you’ll have no trouble finding a pump to keep your RV filled up.

For indoor entertainment options in Clear Lake, particularly when the weather isn’t agreeable, head to the Clear Lakes Art Center. This destination is part museum, part exhibit, and all fun. There are many different types of art collections here, some of which are geared specifically toward children.

To learn about the local history of the region, head to the Clear Lake Fire Museum. This museum covers the history in two ways. First, it showcases the history of the local fire department, including artifacts and former tools used by the firefighters. Secondly, it covers a broader basis, containing exhibits that explain the history of the town and surrounding region. The Clear Lake Fire Museum is more educational than playful, but it is still a great destination when seeking a break from the outdoors.
