China Spring, Texas is in McLennan County, Texas and was founded in 1867 (even though it had been settled as early as 1860). A post office was established there in 1873 and by 1880, it had three general stores and a church, plus a number of gin and gristmills. Its early economy relied on the production of corn, wool, and cotton. It is also the home of guitarist and musician Ted Nugent, who owns a ranch in the area.

RV rentals in McLennan County are perfectly suited to the Texas countryside and are your guarantee of an enjoyable and relaxing vacation. There are some other towns that also warrant visiting. Meridian's first newspaper was the Bosque Beacon, started in 1866. Hillsboro is widely known for its strip malls and truck stops, but its history and culture, which can be experienced off of the highway, run much deeper. Waco is the location where the soft drink Dr. Pepper was invented in 1885 (at Morrison's Old Corner Drug Store, to be exact). McGregor was featured in Season Three of the tv show Fixer Upper (on HGTV). Gatesville was named the “Spur Capital of Texas” by the Texas State Legislature in 2001. Your China Spring travel trailer rental is your introduction to the culture and landscape that is Texas and there is no better way to start.

Discover China Spring

The Great Outdoors

Lake Whitney State Park is a semi-developed outdoor recreation area where visitors can swim, fish, or go hiking, or biking on the park trails. Anglers can try catching a variety of bass or blue catfish; you can fish from a boat on the lake or from shore (no fishing license is required if fishing from the shoreline). Visitors can also try their hand at geocaching or animal watching; the park is home to deer, raccoons, wild turkeys, and many more animal and bird species. It is an ideal place to engage in photography as well, especially at sunset.

Lake Waco Wetlands is a multi-usage nature reserve comprised of marsh and woodlands, and harboring native plant and animal species. It offers guests access to an education center where they can learn about the habitat and animal life, sustainability, and even about the research being conducted by the center. Hiking through the wetlands is possible on elevated boardwalks.

Cameron Park Zoo is open to the public all year round and has a variety of activities on offer. Guests can stand nose-to-glass-pane-to-nose with Komodo dragons and other exotic creatures, explore a variety of simulated habitats housing bald eagles, Galapagos tortoises, and other South American creatures, and much more. Other habitat environments simulate Africa and Asia and you might just see a very friendly orangutan who likes to play practical jokes. Park your China Spring camper rental nearby and enjoy a coffee when you're done (or possibly a shower, if the orangutan got you, but don't say you weren't warned).

RV Parks

There are numerous RV parks and campgrounds within a short drive of China Spring, some more developed and some less. Some of the accommodations may have long-term residents. Your China Spring motorhome rental was made for Texas and is all you need to make yourself at home wherever you stay.

Waco North RV Park and Campground is a rustic, partially developed vacation spot with dirt roads and an open grassy area surrounded by trees and undergrowth. Individual sites have full hookups and guests can request campfire rings, barbecue grills, and picnic tables. Some sites have patios and pull-through access; many have trees providing shade. There are also cabins and a lodge providing accommodation too.

Lake Waco Marina and RV Campground is an RV park on the shore of Lake Waco (as the name suggests). Some sites will have pull-through access while others will be back-in access only; some of the sites have full hookups, a few have water and electricity. The park is pet-friendly and picnic tables are available, as is Wi-Fi.

Exploring The City

There is a lot to see and do in and around China Spring. There are museums, and a good one to start with specializes in the history of Dr. Pepper (which was first created in this area). Tours of the museum include tasting samples of the original drink (not quite the same as today's) and demonstrations on how to cook with Dr. Pepper. Another museum focuses on the history of the famed Texas Rangers. Some important and interesting landmarks include a memorial to veterans of the Vietnam War and a suspension bridge. Don't leave without photos of these historic sites and make sure that your China Spring motorhome rental is in them.

When you have had enough walking for one day, it's time to relax and reward yourself with a good meal. There is a huge selection of restaurants to choose from and an equally diverse selection of cuisines. Most of the restaurants are locally owned and operated; one local Chinese venue provides in-house dining or takeout, whichever you prefer. The decor is simple and unobtrusive but nice, as their focus is on the food. Especially good here is the steamed dumplings. Another local favorite serves Greek and Middle Eastern food; it is a family-run business with a simple and clean atmosphere. There are some southern U.S. items on the menu for the less adventurous; one item definitely worth trying is the spanakopita. Portions are large, so be prepared to take some of your meal home to your China Spring RV trailer rental for a late night snack.
