Just outside of Waco in the heart of Texas, the tiny community of Chilton can be found. The town is unincorporated, with a population that hovers around a thousand people. The first settlers of what is now known as Chilton first arrived in 1854, who in turn named the new settlement Abney’s Farm. The town’s name was later changed to Chilton in honor of Lysias B. Chilton who opened the first store in the vicinity.

Historically, the town has been home to a few lumber yards, cotton gins, and flour mills. When the railway was built close to town, Chilton was designated as one of the stops, making it a shipping hub for goods traveling between places like San Antonio and Dallas. With the discovery of local oil deposits in the 1920s, Chilton became known for its small oil wells, a sight that would become more and more common in Texas.

When you book an RV in Chilton, you’ll find the same sleepy community largely devoid of noise and frantic pace. Chilton has retained its character and spirit since it was first settled, with a distinctly Western vibe that many travelers love to feel in person.

The Great Outdoors

Texas is one of the largest states in the country and it’s absolutely packed with parks, forests, desert landscapes, and an assortment of other fun outdoor features. Every part of Texas has its own distinct characteristics, from the dry deserts of the west to the lush forests and wetlands of its southeast region. Chilton is firmly located in the center of Texas, so you can rent an RV in town and reach any place in the Lone Star State with a little bit of effort. Fort Parker State Park is an excellent place to start off your Chilton camper rental vacation, located to the northeast. Fort Parker Lake is the main attraction at Fort Parker State Park and it was artificially made by damming the Navasota River. There are several hiking loops and ample space to splash around in the water when you bring your Chilton RV rental to the park or visit its wonderful nature center.

Mother Neff State Park has the distinction of being the first state park ever established in Texas and is quite close to Chilton. The park was named for Isabella Eleanor Neff, the mother of Governor Pat Norris Neff because she chose to donate some land to the state to create it. The park is an awesome place to have a picnic, hike around, geocache, or explore the rocky canyons. You can camp at the park overnight in your Chilton camper rental when you visit the site, which is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its antiquated structures.

If you head up to Waco, the Waco Mammoth National Monument is a fascinating paleontological site where you can see dozens of preserved Wooly Mammoth skeletons. These creatures were thought to have perished in a flood over 60,000 years ago and have provided researchers and experts with invaluable insight into the life of the now extinct animals.

Serious hikers and long-distance trekkers should take their Chilton motorhome rental to Sam Houston National Forest down by the city of Houston, and walk the famous Lone Star Trail which is over 120 miles long. There are plenty of lakes for boating, creeks for swimming or fishing, wide open spaces to hunt, and ample space to camp out under the stars. There are also archeological sites scattered around the large national forest that have evidence of human occupation from at least 7,000 years ago if not longer.

RV Parks

Chilton might not be the liveliest city but it is surrounded by enough nature and beauty for there to be a ton of options as far as campgrounds go. Bring your Chilton RV rental to Falls On the Brazos Park, a small park on the riverside. There are historic walking trails, picnic spots, playgrounds, and camping sites for both RVs and tents.

Waco RV Park allows you to stay closer to the city, within a short distance of its many attractions. This family-owned park can accommodate long-term and short-term camping and has a swimming pool.

Flat Creek Farms RV Resort is another place to camp out for a few nights, with access to a range of amenities. There are community cabins on site with free-to-use kitchens, as well as laundry facilities, showers, restrooms, and more.

City Attractions

When you rent an RV in Chilton, you may not find a lot of entertainment options in town. You can find quite a variety of options by heading up to nearby Waco. Waco Mammoth National Monument mentioned before is a fantastic place to see in person, and one of the city’s most well-known attractions. There is a great museum and learning center located in the park that you can tour around once you are through seeing the dig sites.

The Cameron Park Zoo is medium sized and full of exotic animals from all over the world. There are beautifully maintained landscapes, informative exhibits, and a great aquarium within the zoo.

One of the largest and most iconic landmarks in Waco is the Waco Suspension Bridge, created by the same firm that built the Brooklyn Bridge. This beautiful engineering masterpiece spans the Brazos River and is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the state.

You are definitely in for a real treat if you choose to visit the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum, an ode to the rugged lawmen who kept Texas safe throughout its turbulent history. There are loads of antique pistols, uniforms, badges, and other interesting items on display, and a 40-minute film highlighting the founding of the Texas Rangers.
