The city is best known for its annual Chilhowee Fair which began in 1948 and celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2007 with a rodeo, carnival, and a parade plus other events.

The Great Outdoors

Knob Noster State Park was created during the Great Depression with three goals in mind: public access to outdoor recreation; creating employment; and rehabilitating land that had been depleted from agricultural activity. It was turned over upon completion to the state of Missouri around 1946 and today is a popular destination for a variety of activities such as hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and much more. Guests can reserve a shelter or picnic out in the open; the park offers interpretive programs and a visitor center with exhibits explaining the park's history and natural features. Visitors can fish for bass, bluegill, and channel catfish.

Settle's Ford Conservation Area was purchased using federal funds to create an upland and bottomland nature preserve with nesting habitat and winter cover for a variety of wildlife. The area was seeded with seasonal grasses, grain crops, and tree saplings to further the cause. Visitors can fish in the numerous small ponds for black bass, catfish, and crappie, or hunt for deer, rabbit, and turkey. Trapping is allowed with a special permit, or guests can enjoy bird watching and hiking the trails that wind through the hardwood forests, small glades, and wetlands. Park your Chilhowee camper rental nearby, and you can take your catch of fish direct from the water to your fridge.

Brush Creek State Wildlife Management Area is a smaller section of the Birdsong Conservation Area; the creek itself is a medium-size creek with water willows near the creek fringes and is known to have more than three dozen fish species which visitors can try to catch from the river bank. Birders should be on the lookout for northern parula and wood ducks; hikers can enjoy the many foot-traffic-only trails that wind through the park.
