THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is located around 50 miles south of town. The park offers camping, hiking, scenic drives, and fishing opportunities. Grand Mesa National Forest is located less than 25 miles to the north of Cedaredge. This site's claim to fame is that it is the World's Largest Mesa. Camping, hiking, fishing, and scenic drives are all available here. Be aware, the winter months are long, and the snow is deep in the local area, making it well known for the winter sports it offers. At the summit of the mesa is an old observation site that is now known for its overly-friendly chipmunks! Mosquito spray is strongly encouraged when visiting the area in the warmer months.

There are plenty of hiking and cross-country ski trails available at Grand Mesa. One particular favorite is the Crag Crest Trail that takes hikers to a crest point on the mesa (hence the name). It offers expansive views of the surrounding valley and lakes that make up the local area. Please note, portions of the mesa reach over 10,000 feet in elevation, so people from lower altitudes should be prepared when exerting themselves. This trail is also on an exposed rock face, and should not be attempted if lightning is expected.
