Chartered as a borough in 1853, Catasauqua sprawls along the Lehigh River to the north of Philadelphia and is affectionately known by locals as “Catty.” It was established as a manufacturing hub for anthracite iron in the mid-19th century, although George Taylor (a signer of the Declaration of Independence) had built his Georgian stone house here as early as 1768.

It still stands on the riverbanks of Catasauqua today, with Victorian mansions built by wealthy residents in the surrounding streets. At the turn of the 20th century, Catasauqua had the highest percentage of self-made millionaires of any town in the United States. It’s this rich history combined with the town’s proximity to recreational reserves that make Catasauqua an ideal place to rent an RV while exploring the sights of Lehigh County.

The Great Outdoors

Pick up your motorhome rental in Catasauqua and drive north to the Beltzville State Park, which centers around the Pohopoco Creek and human-made Beltzville Dam. It’s a popular place for local anglers to cast a line, with striped bass, walleye, and perch among the offerings, or you can just enjoy swimming from the sandy beach. If you want to stretch your legs, there’s an extensive network of hiking trails to explore, with the opportunity to spot white-tailed deer, squirrels, and groundhogs along the way.

Drive in the other direction, and you’ll arrive at the Nockamixon State Park, which is one of southeastern Pennsylvania’s most popular recreational areas. You can hit the waters of Lake Nockamixon by boat or kayak, then try your luck at luring walleye, pickerel, and a variety of bass. Numerous hiking and biking trails also crisscross Nockamixon State Park while horses can be rented in Haycock if you want to explore the equestrian trails along the southern shoreline.

Traveling with kids? Don’t miss a visit to the Lehigh Valley Zoo, which lies within the 1,100-acre Trexler Nature Preserve in nearby Schnecksville. It’s home to animals from across the globe that include Masai giraffe, kangaroos, and penguins, with plenty of interactive experiences on offer. Get up close to the friendly alpacas and Nubian goats or encounter inquisitive emus and Mexican gray wolves.

RV Parks

Pick up your travel trailer rental in Catasauqua and head to Allentown KOA, which nestles in a picturesque mountain valley to the west. This family-friendly RV camp features two playgrounds, a pool, and a game room, not to mention a recreational center where movie nights and bingo take place.

Slightly farther north lies the StonyBrook RV Resort, which is a good option if you’re traveling with a big rig. Their 50-amp full hookup sites come with water, sewer, and cable connections while there’s complimentary Wi-Fi available throughout the park. If you’ve forgotten anything, there’s no need to worry, with an on-site store where you can pick up grocery supplies.

A short drive from the StonyBrook RV Resort is the Lizard Creek Campground, a family-owned RV park between the Lehigh Valley and the Pocono Mountains. Aside from its swimming pool, there’s a tranquil creek running through the property where you can fish, and there is also a convenient camp store on site.

Or, you can make the 15-minute drive into Allentown where there’s a Walmart where you may be able to set up for a night or two with the manager’s permission.

Exploring the City

Park your RV rental near Catasauqua and head to the Historic Catasauqua Preservation Association to delve into the local history.
