Castalia is a small, charming village in Erie County, Ohio. This tiny community is considered part of the Sandusky Metropolitan Area and is found approximately halfway between the cities of Toledo and Cleveland. Castalia was once a thriving Wyandot native settlement before the encroaching French colonial powers sought to dominate the Ohio Territory. When the Wyandot people burnt their own village to the ground and relocated to a different area, they vacated an amazing location that was soon reclaimed by settlers. After 1836, Castalia was formally laid out and planned, and the residents named the settlement after a Greek mythological creature who was transformed into the fountain of Delphi by Apollo.

Castalia is small, and while big-city attractions might not be what the town is known for, the city is certainly proud of its gorgeous nature parks and scenery. This mostly rural town is conveniently close to a wide range of places you can visit with a Castalia RV rental, like the dozens of state parks that line the nearby shores of Lake Erie. Lake Erie itself is a large part of the area’s summertime tourism, and Castalia has even been known to throw a few celebrations and events throughout the year, like the Cold Creek Festival held each July on Main Street.

Discover Castalia

The Great Outdoors

When you book an RV in Castalia, you’ll have the pleasure of choosing between a wide variety of amazing natural areas and parks scattered throughout northern Ohio, each with their own unique characteristics and features. You can start your Castalia RV rental trip by taking a drive to Castalia Quarry MetroPark, just a few minutes’ drive down the road. This amazing little park is home to fascinating geological features, glacial grooves, and fossils dating back over several hundred million years. After the old rock quarry was shut down in 1965, the area was transformed back into a lush nature park where hiking, biking, and dog walking are popular pastimes.

Across the Sandusky Bay, there are a few parks worth bringing your Castalia motorhome rental for a visit, like East Harbor State Park. This park lies at the end of a peninsula that juts out into Lake Erie. There are miles of hiking trails to explore, scenic beaches, a marina for boats, disc golf courses, and swimming areas at this coastal park. If you take a ferry to Kelleys Island, you can further explore Kelleys Island State Park, a beloved gem of a park hidden away on Lake Erie. The park takes up a large chunk of the island and is known for its spectacular sunsets and sunrises, its splendid hiking trails, and its small campground that can accommodate you and a small Castalia camper rental.

If you enjoy driving in your Castalia RV rental, you can head towards Cleveland and check out Ohio’s only national park. Cuyahoga Valley National Park is much smaller than most national parks in the country, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in sheer beauty. Hiking through the dense forest groves is an absolute pleasure, especially when you are on the hunt for the hidden waterfalls and rocky gorges within the park. There are lots of camping spots for the motorhome rental from Castalia, making it a versatile destination and a wonderful place to spend part of your vacation.

RV Parks

In the summertime, the area around Sandusky and Castalia are teeming with tourists, all looking for RV parks, campgrounds, and hotels where they can stay while enjoying the weather and views of Lake Erie. Fortunately, there is no shortage of places to accommodate you and your Castalia RV rental while you are in town, so you can rest easy while heading off to places like Gotta Getaway RV Park. The park is close to lots of local museums and attractions, with its own outdoor pool, volleyball courts, playground, and more.

Crystal Rock Campground is to the north near the lake, with a lively yet relaxing atmosphere. There are volleyball courts, basketball courts, playgrounds, pavilions, a recreation hall, a camp store, a gem museum, and a laundry facility on site.

Sandusky Bayshore KOA campground has its own gem mine and store, a pool, a snack bar, basketball courts, bicycle rentals, and a fishing pond on site.

City Sightseeing

Castalia might not be known for its points of interest, but nearby Sandusky and other adjacent towns have all the fun you could dream of. Cedar Point is an iconic amusement park in nearby Sandusky that has its own hotels, restaurants, and thrilling roller coasters. You can splash around in the waterpark, enjoy some good food, or try to hold your lunch on some of the most intense roller coasters in the park. Kalahari Waterparks is a similar water-themed park that is located indoors, away from the harsh winters of northern Ohio. The water is refreshingly warm, and there is lots to do for people of all ages at this family-centric waterpark.

African Safari Wildlife Park is a magnificent park located on 60 acres of land. You can tour the property from the comfort of a vehicle while you get up close and personal to exotic animals from Asia and Africa. There are educational animal shows, aviary experiences with birds, and camel rides offered in the park too.

Ghostly Manor Thrill Center is one of the scariest haunted houses you can imagine, so steer clear if you don’t like elevated heart rates and nightmares. Fans of horror movies and Halloween-themed fun will relish the opportunity to walk through a spooky labyrinth full of shocks and scares at every turn. There are also skating rinks, escape rooms, arcade games, and rides at this family-friendly park if being scared isn’t your thing.
